Heading to Pulaski for a few days of steelheading this Sunday. Anyone been up there recently? How about you Stiff Tip?

Good luck Dennis...

Makes me think of old Uncle Zeke - in fact, I've been cleaning out and organizing my tackle shack and found the steelie blank he picked out for me at one of the shows that was like his.

I'm gonna have Billie at Edward's wrap it for me so I can use it for this year's Spring blackfish run at the spot where you and I went sight-fishing for blacks...

Yup, I'm gonna take at stab at wrestling the '09 Blackfish Division trophy away from Team Oakley...

There, I said it, the gauntlet has been thrown down...

Good luck - wish I could go, been thinking about calling Too Tall Babinski to see if he wants to go to the Wood River or maybe the mighty Beaver for trout...

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.

Call Whitakers Sport Shop in Pulaski for a report.
There used to be a Salmon River hotline giving water levels etc., meantime i'll call a friend of mine who lives in the area, fishes it and keeps up on local reports.

Dennis, Jim can make a call for you to a local guide....funny thing about calling Whitackers...I've never been told that the fishing has been bad....they always say it's great...then you go up there and they say that you just missed a huge run...Pulaski is funnny place like that...good luck...

Well, you asked how the fishing was, not the catching!

I was up T-Day till Sunday with Tony for the first time. 2 days of fishing I hooked into 5 fish and lost them all after some nice battles. I am ruined. Shock and Awe is all I can say. I landed a decent Brown though. Those guys were coming home today. We had fish every day. Just need to work for them. Make sure your guides have some ice off on them and the snow wasn't a problem just adds to the magic.

I am going up next week as well. Fishing has been good move around and you will find the fish. Schoolhouse pool is busy with people. DSR still has fish and much less crowds, all silver fish as well. trout beads, egg sacks and flies are all working. With the cold coming back in over the weekend fish later in the day for better results and be prepared for the lake effect machine to kicks back in if the winds get going. Good luck.

Thanks for everyone's help. I've been going to Pulaski off and on since the late 1980s - steelies are my second favorite fish to target. Having good river intell is so critical when you first arrive.

For those of you who have never been up there - a world class fishery if you hit it right but you have to be prepaired for cold fishing. Just when you think your the only kook who would fish in 15 degree weather - you look up and down river and see 15 more kooks. Gotta love it.

Dennis, I had to take some photos of the parking areas to show to my family so they would believe that I wasn't the only nut.

Tynan19,
I'm hearing they have been buried up there the last 24 hrs with very heavy lake effect. Call someone up there before you leave.
Whitakers - 315-298-6162

I'm not leaving until Sunday morning.

Actually Tony has me convinced to bring the snowmobiles up there and ride in the mornings and fish in the afternoons. Sounds like a great plan. I understand the weather can get brutal up there and knew the conditions so I decided not to make the trip. I do a lot of 6 hr one way trips on weekends in the winter to get to the good snow in Maine so 4 hrs to NY is not that bad of a haul.

Roy, that was my plan leave here at 12a fish all day and drive home Sat night. Brutal but better than heroin I think?
