looking to put a smaller profile out for distance...seen some picky fish on small bait that had lockjaw thought why change the shape it works...so I downsized it to 5-5.5 inch and went to maple with a 1oz tailweight there 2.5-2.7oz before there finished...probly way too heavy for good action so I turned them into flaptails kinda...clarktails...can't wait to try them
nice shape, you should carry the flatbottom back a little further though, so that it has a nice wide planing surface right at the fattest part of the plug. That'll keep it on top, and give it a real nice action!
Should work fine as pencils even with the added weight. You might consider a lighter wood so they'll be a little more bouyant. You can still load them with lead to get your target weight. I do some from AYC that are 5 inches and 2 oz. They'll work like a pencil fine in moving water. A little harder to work in flat water. They'll cast well too. Ask Ratty to show you one the next time you see him
