New Here
Just wanted to say hello. You guys do some sweet work! I have been building plugs for a couple of months now. Here is one I finished recently.
I hope to learn and contribute here. Take it easy on me though, as I am from CT and mostly fish from a boat. Oops, I said it, the b-word

Thanks for the kind words! The hook is a VMC 4X. Don't think its stainless, not sure how quickly it will rust....
Slipknot, I played hockey up until last month when I had shoulder surgery. Played left wing in highschool and college. Played five years in a men league as a left winger. Hopefully it will heal enough to play again. I just hope I can fish this spring with it! The wood is poplar, from the local home center. I am looking for suggestions on what type of wood is best for the different plug types.

Good luck with the shoulder.
Stay away from poplar, it tends to rot quickly in the presence of water. Birch or maple is good if sealed properly for darters, needles, poppers. For swimmers you want lighter woods like Alaskan yellow cedar,Port Orford cedar, Red western cedar. AYC is the heaviest of the threee with red being the lightest. I use alot of AYC even for poppers and large needles.

Slipknot, thanks for the info on suitable wood types. It looks like it is time to extend my search beyond the local home center. I will look into the cedar and see if it can be had locally.
Pasngas, I got the netting for the scale pattern from one of the lure building supply places. Is it ok to say which one here? Sorry, but I am new, and did not read the rules closely.

Nice swimmer! What are the specs on that one? How does it swim? I agree with slip on the wood, the cedars hold up better. I have used poplar in the past too. As long as you seal it well, it will hold up ok. The AYC is a little lighter and more bouyant than the poplar. Works great for swimmers, pikies, etc. I also like it for topwater spook or popper type baits.

The specs on that one are 7", 3 oz. Weighted a tad under the chin. Sealed with linseed oil cut with turp, primed w/bullseye, Createx paints and top coated with Foamawood.
The belly hook is bronzed. Should I swap it out for something better suited for saltwater?

Use the same brand and strength (VMC 4x) but swap it for a Perma Steel finish.

Hey SS
Glad to see you over here. Hope you had a good time at my house Sunday morning and made enough lead for what you need. Forgot to take those two electrics off my bench home with you. I'll be in touch

Does anybody have a good source for the VMC tinned 4X trebles in bulk?
