NEED NERD

Bought this computer from BrianS. Compaq 1.8 pentium and 384mb memory windows xp fresh install I believe. John R this computer is similar to the one I bought off you that works on the other machine.

Thing locked up the other day and gave me a weird error which I don't remember now. I was in the middle of running the cnc program I use and it quit. Then it started telling me there were problems with the windows page file and corrupt files on the hard drive, or that settings could not be saved because there was a problem with a file and windows needed to reboot or it rebooted on it's own.

I shut the page file thing off and it seems to have helped but what is now happening is that the machine will stop in the middle of a cut, the screen says it's on a line in the middle of the program, the timer still runs on the screen, the hard drive light is on and the machine stays in that one place then on it's own starts right back up where it left off SOMETIMES (sometimes it just stays there forever) and it will finish the program but only after it sits for a short time.

Not enough memory? Hard drive?

Sledgehammer?

Try a fresh load of the O/S and then re-install the CNC software. if that doesn't work it could be the Hard Drive is on its way out.

blue screens of death and other computer messages sometimes lie
or don't point to your actual problem

it's just the default response by the computer when there is a problem

so don't accept the face value of it as being gospel

if it was me........

i would google "sufficient memory for cnc computers" and ping the
worlds blogs for a similar person's dilemma and read for a bit all the answers
and many times that will reveal the solution

Salty, my guess is inline with TDF, hard drive is crapping out. In my experience, best case life expectancy of a moderately used HD is 4-5 years. Based on the specs of you computer, I'd bet you're right about there if not past that point.

I'd get the smallest new HD I could find. Should be around $30. Hell, you're probably using so little storage space that you could buy a $15 USB thumb drive and run windows and your CNC control software off of that.

NICE - Keyboard and mouse driver ?

Just kidding - that particular issues is usually a corrupt os files, this occurs a lot when the page file is not large enough to handle the program that is being ran and the system locks and try's to dump un necessary programs being ran, you can increase your page file to 4096 and turn off system restore to try and gain some efficiency. The other thing that may cause the file to become corrupted other then a bad HD is a bad stick of memory however, you would have received a error.

K I'm going to change the drive and memory off another machine and make at least one work. I think Brian said this was a fresh os install and the cnc program is pretty small-don't take very much to run the thing.

or

in line with JD's approach you could go grab an external hard drive

super huge one's are goin cheap on black friday deals "ahead of time"
@ new egg ,,,,so a smaller one cost would far less

and then don't use the internal hard drive for that anymore
completely by passing it...

just plug it in via a usb port and copy the software from drive C to drive D
or what ever it's named and your golden.

How big is the HD in there?
how much is available?
How many processes running?
Did you run a scan disk?
Do you have up to date video and chipset drivers?
Before you guy buy one or even a external, there needs to be some more do diligence.
Salt i tried to PM you but . Failed

email no pms I can't keep up with it. It's a midol thing.

It's a TAINT computer

Taint too old

Taint too small

I dunno the drive stuff right now I got it disconnected and on another machine right now. I'm going to rob the memory out of it and stuff it in the machine that's working right now.

Be careful with doing that, some require memory to match.

Bought this car from Joe's Cherry Autos. 2002 Chevy Malibu with 94,000 miles, recent tune up I believe. John R this car is similar to the one I bought off you that the wife drives.

Thing stalled out the other day and made a weird noise which I don't remember now. I was in the middle of running to the office and it quit. Then the gauges started lighting, telling me there were problems with the engine or emissions or something.

I pulled the computer chip out and took off the exhaust and it seems to have helped but what is now happening is that the car will stall out whenever I come to a stop, the neighbors look at me funny, and the local cop has pulled me over twice and given me warnings.

Engine? Wiper Blades?

Scott - much like mentioned above - sounds like the hard drive is failing or the OS is miconfigured / Virus / Malware. Turning off the page file is the equivalent of ripping out a cars computer chip, it might run but it will likely run like #@#^ and stall out all of the time.

You need to recreate the page file. And do a full scandisk on the computer ; My Computer, Right click on drive, properties, tools, scan disk. You can also google active disk monitor and have that do a scan disk - then tell us what you see.

I don't have anything that old that I feel confident the static buildup in years of dust hasn't zapped unreliable.

BossMan is on a roooolllll!!!

I have been having a problem with the summer air. It's lighter than the winter air and I get better gas mileage. But as it start to get cold, my tires go flat and I need fill them with the heavier winter air. So I can't find a way to keep it light after it's starts to freeze What should I should I do?

....you use the Jiffy pop method

wrap your tires in tin foil then make it lurch

.......backwards and forwards.

this changes the AIR to Obama Hot air

and it'll never be stale after that

I tried that, I had hope, and now I'm out 20 bucks for foil and 100 bucks for driving a hazardous vehicle on a public causeway

ahhh ...... i see

well then put a tiger in your tank

go to "tiger direct" and grab a one terabyte hard drive for your
diesel truck computer
External Hard Drive, External Hard Disk Drive, Computer External Hard Drive, Portable External Hard Drive at TigerDirect.com

for less than a $hundred$ bucks
you can just install artificial intelligence
in your vehicle.

of course you need to mount cameras
but the upside to that is
no one can steal your rods.
