Lure Tube How To

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but figured more people might benefit from it here than the plug building section. Move if needed.

So Im not sure how many people have used or tried the luretube plug holder. Its a great idea but didnt do what i needed.

Its too short only 8" and too narrow inside only 2". Which sounds like enough but you can only fit one plug and has to be on the smaller side. It does fit one eel skin plug, but just one. Because of the narrower size it doesnt allow the plugs to tilt and give more room.

I like the idea of having an extra tube for the skin plugs or even carrying a few extra plugs especially if im going to start at sundown and want to throw some topwater before it gets dark, then not be bothered with them in my main two tube bag.

So instead of buying a single tube bag for $100 I made one for $8.

Might not be the prettiest thing out there but Im sure it will come in handy this season.

I started with an "info tube" you can pick em up at any home supply shop, cost me $8, which was my only purchase, the rest of the stuff was in house already.

The tube is 3" around and 12" long. The end caps are removeable.

1. Remove the bottom cap and mark with a sharpie 9 holes.

2. Drill out the holes.

3. Measure how long you want the tube, I choose 8.5" that way I can carrying some bigger eel skins or pencils.

4. I left the metal rig on it that comes with it and used that as my guide, giving me a clean edge. i used an x-acto knife heated with a candle to make the cuts.

5. Next step was to drill a small hole to attach a rope that will connect to the lid.

6. Attach a length of rope to the lid and tie a knot, run the other end on the inside of the tube and out the side, tie another knot. This will keep you lid from getting lost in the surf.

7. With some waterproof epoxy or other waterproof sealer, install the bottom end cap, keeping it away from the holes.

8. Apply some to both ends of the rope on the lid, you may need to do one at a time and allow to try.

9. For the belt loop I used a piece of old nylon webbing. I ran some waterproof duct tape around the bottom, placed the belt and added some epoxy, then wrapped the bottom loop with a few pieces of tape making sure to overlap.

10. Make sure to leave enough room in the belt loop to actually get your belt thru it while doing the top piece. Repeat the same steps for securing the bottom piece. Let dry and your good to go.

The lid fits very snuggly, it might loosen over time.

Its not the best looking plug tube but should work for what I need. I like the fact its the same size as my other tubes in my bags.

Hope this helps somebody else out.

First concern might be: Will the clear tube plastic degrade and become brittle?
Salt and sun can cause plastics to degrade over time.
Also, do you really want to let everyone know what lures you are brining and which one you are throwing?

Seriously, it looks good (for a prototype I'm assuming?). A little tweaking will do wonders for its success and longevity.

It appears to be the same tubing that AS uses in there bags, so not worried about it degrading.

I dont fish in the daylight so not worried about the sun doing any damage.

In my 124 trips last year, I only saw people fishing on three occasions, one being the habs tourney, and the other two being the fall run.

I fish with two guys on a regular basis so people seeing what I throw or am using has never been an issue.

yeah its the first one, so im sure with some tweaking and feedback once i start using it i can improve on it.

I made something similar for eels. I often think about making something out of 3/4 or 1" PVC for tins. My Summer place I use a lot of tin.

Looks good to me. I always thought the lure tube concept was good I just couldn't see spending the money for the tubes. It seemed like a ton of dough for what it is.

Good work...you may run into some issues with treble hooks getting caught on the cord attaching the cap to the tube (running cord outside the tube instead??) ...let us know how this works out for you.

Or maybe vulanized rubber like they use for bungee cords?

Yeah I need to move the cord to the outside, had a brain fart!

The lure tubes are only 8 bucks each, so it's not a matter of saving money just having something bigger and taller for more plugs.

Thats a cool idea. I need something like that for carrying a plug that i like but just wont fit in the bag. Looks good for riggies too if i ever get around to using them.

REI makes this bottle holder ( short money ) that holds a tennis ball sleeve perfect, the belt loop is sewn in and durable.
Cheap and easy

Awesome! Thanks dual purpose, I'll have to grab one of those.

Think I'll use my tube in that carrier.

Any drainage on the bottom?

Chef if there isn't you can pick up a grommet kit at ace hardware, I am sure some other hardware stores would carry them too.

I use a 10" paintball tube with sheath for my 9" needles, Jointed swimmers, etc.

I love it... Use it when you need it, ditch it when you dont. Cheap at walmart or anywhere else paintball garbage is sold.
