Plum Island Question

I'm going to be spending a week on Plum Island and have 1 question -

Serious question - Do I take the road bike or my mountain bike? If I take the road bike, I'll be riding by myself 40 -50 miles per trip at around 16 -17 mph. If I take the mountain bike, I'll be riding with the wife at around 8 mph for 8 miles. Are the roads decent for my road bike and any suggested trips (rockport, newburyport, etc.)?

Thanks

Roads are good all around that area. Newburyport, Rockport, and surrounding areas are big for Bikes.....see them cruising around all over the place. The only place you would need the mountain bike would probably be on the reservation...the road turns into a dirt road about a mile in.

Are you planning on doing any fishing? if so give me a holler...I live about 20 minutes from PI.

I'll PM you my cell if you have any questions about the area (i.e. restaurants, pubs, etc.)

A lot of Newburyport and Newbury even have a bike lane. They use those bike taxis all over there.

Bring your road bike if you really want some decent riding, head of Island and hit 1A south and keep on going, ride down through Ipswich and on through Essex. There really are some great rides around this area, a mountain bike would be best for just cruising the island with the wife. Just watch out when you hit the dirt part of the refuge road, if it's been dry you'll want goggles and a dust mask. Ive seen some really pissed off people down there when you just drive by them after they've made the mistake of going too far down and having to ride back through the dust.

yeah it's road bike heaven! If you come to the Rockport area (which is a good 30mins away from PI) you can do a loop all around the "island" which is just over the bridge into Gloucester and Rockport.
