my email got hijacked

Someone got into my hotmail account and was sending junk out to my contacts. I have deleted all my contacts, but what do I have to do so it doesn't happen again?

Probably came from an e-mail attachment you opened. Run your anti virus and malware scan.

do you happen to have a copy of one of these emails?
are they in the sent items?
did you receive bounce backs ( un deliverable ) ?
did someone alert you of this?

the reason i ask is 99 / 100 times its a spoof that has taken place, and by that i mean someone has used your email as a reply to address in 3rd party programs, if you have a copy of this email with the meta data attached i would love to take a look at it.

Skippy is correct - 4/5 - almost certainly spoofing.

There is specific data within the original email that can be inspected to determine what the source was of the email was. This may help determine if it was a bot/malware locally or a spoof (most likely), or a password issue.

Enlighten me John, what is a "spoof"?

I'm technologically challenged, so pretend you're talking to a slow 5 year old, please.

A "Spoof" in email is like real life when something masquerades as something else. Email spoofing commonly has one entity sending out emails as if they were a different entity. For example, I can go on one of my machines and send you an email that would show up as "GOD@heaven.org" but more accurately I can send an email to "Check this out" to 10 of your friends and the return email address they would see would be yours. So basically I am masquerading as your email account

So, by not having an Email account, I'm safe from this sort of hi jinx .

Skippy,

Don't know what meta data is.... but here is the body of the emails sent to my contacts.

Does this help? Only went to my brother and sister, as they are only contacts I had re-loaded since it first happened a few weeks ago. Also changed my sign in password, although it is a low security PW.

I've told people before....I can send e-mail as anybody I want to be....takes me all of 10 seconds to do.

right now there's not much you can do about it

Nightfighter, i sent you a PM

Meta data, in a nut shell is the history of any document, another words when you send it to me its tagged, i send it to someone and its tagged, all documents have this, windows has build in some meta data stripping software ( well was suppose to in vista ) however once it hits the inet, its all traceable, unless proxied correctly.

Someone spoofed me a couple years ago, and it sent out spam to all my contacts, had to delete my contact list. It would send out email to everyone, with a strange name as the subject and a link, a few people clicked the link and it downloaded some BS on to their puters as well. I changed my password and life is good again in hotmail land.

Everything is better on the rocks.
