It's fallen way Off the last few years. Love reading the same articles every other week by a different author.

I would rather see it be a monthly magazine with good content than a weekly mag with maybe one article that's readable or useable.

Timely reports, and a big newsstand presence (Stop & Shop, particularly). I think, are NEF strong suits. Which is not a criticism of the articles. I just think the impetus to buy it is more because of the timely reports and the fact that it is highly visible.
If you've been fishing for a while, week old data is very valuable, when contrasted to month old data. If the fish were in one spot last week, and if you've been at it ten years, you can make a fairly accurate prediction as to where they will be next. And your b.s. meter is in tune as to which shops and people are more trustworthy than others. It's no secret that striper movement throughout normal seasons approaches a paint-by-numbers game of hop-scotch.

Joe is right. The reports have always been a big selling point. I don't think many realize just how difficult it is to get freelance writers to write stuff and do it on a deadline. I'm a writer and I cringe when I think about how much content Toby needs to arrange/edit on a WEEKLY BASIS. My hats off to him in this very challenging position.

I let my subscription lapse this past year. While waiting in line at the gas station i flip through the reports. I check them from a few shops and set it down, if an article catches my eye i will buy it. There are some good articles in it. I feel that when you have been fishing for a while that articles really need to be good to learn something from them. I enjoy the articles about fisheries management. I dont know Toby but i have read a bunch of his stuff in the past and was pleased to see him on board at the Fisherman. Good luck.

November 25, 1982, Top of the Dock, Narragansett, RI – "The big news this week comes from Block Island. The guys in boats and those on the beach were really into impressive numbers of bass last week. An average night for the regulars was 6-7 fish in the high 30s and low 40s. Andy Lemar had fish of 51, 50.5, 45, 41, 39, and 36. These were on eels and plugs."

Wakefield Arms, RI – "Block Island has been turning out some decent bass…. one customer took eight fish last Wednesday for a total of 300 pounds; all on Rebels."

Elmwood Sport Shop, RI – "The guys at Block Island finally got into some heavy action last week. A couple of regulars reported a pair of fish over 50 and another 15 all better than 30 pounds."

December 9, 1982, Block Island – "The bass run made it into December. Joe Fallon said there hasn't been many fish but those taken were all good ones. Plenty of straightened hooks and lost fish. Rebels are tops. Tops all week was Steve Smith's 57.8 pounder".

Wakefield Arms, RI – "Sharp shooters still taking bass at Block. Rumor has it that some anglers had upwards of 1200 pounds in a single night. Every fish mentioned was in the 30s and 40s."

December 16, 1982, Block Island – "Bass fishermen hooked and lost a tremendous number of fish this past week. There was action every night until the storm hit. All were big fish. Nothing but 30s and 40s and all on Rebels. Jon Grant had 5 keepers last week, the largest a 46. Steve Smith took a like number including a 46 and a 58."

Toby is a serious, methodical and thoughtful angler. I think he's capable of producing a very useful product.

Two things they should consider to make the publication more current

1) Consider an electronic form of subscription ( more timely and saving on mailing and more green plus additional ad rev)

2) Allow for some way to dig up back articles. You guys have published some great ones over the years. Basically, they are gone forever if they can not be easily retrieved. No one wants a stack of old fishermen weekly's that can't be searched) Allow for back searches and then charge for the download. (added rev) I know the older editions are not digitized, but: a) this can be done as a one time expense b) you need to start keeping everything from here on out digitized.
For example: it would be great if you could search for "Tog Buzzards Bay" and see the title and brief segment of every article that was ever written on this subject. Then charge for the download of the full article(s).
You could then actually monetize the hidden value of these past articles... charging for each download....over and over forever.

(IMO most fishermen like to peruse this thing seasonally usually while sitting on the can on a Friday to get the buzz for the weekends fishing activities. This is still a stone age kind of operation and (again MO which is worth the same as the the paper quality of the mag) will cause it's eventual demise from the current Facebook generation who doesn't read anything written on paper.

How about an app? to get reports/articles/searches.

Sorry, just brain storming. I suspect why nothing changes with the fishermen is that the people who work there are very involved and all very busy just trying to get the next paper edition complete and secure advertisers and no one has the time to work on this massive project like this. Also I get the feeling that the people at the top really don't want any change.

I want to start off by saying thanks to everyone for the well wishes. I am very excited about this new endeavor. I figure after 8+ years at my last job (paralegal), 9+ at the prior job (truck driver) and not really going anywhere, this was the right time to move onto something new. I have been at the helm for 3 weeks now, and it has been an eye opening experience to say the least. I have a ton of respect for those that came before me (Tim, Zach & Dave) in the Mystic office and plan to keep up the high standards that I have come to expect from the magazine as a long time reader and subscriber. I am really looking forward to the new opportunities the position will afford me as I will be taking a crash course in many new styles of fishing and target species that I just didn't previously have time for.

Sandman - Stay tuned for some much needed, and long overdue digital options from the magazine shortly. That was one thing I was very happy to find out was already in the works.

If anyone has any ideas, suggestions, critisisms or anything else of the magazine and/or the job I am doing, I want to hear them all. I really want to bring some new blood to the magazine too, so I encourage anyone that has ever thought about writing to email me at tlapinski@thefisherman.com.

Well Jim green is something to think about but we need jobs too. LOL Every time we go electronic another productuve member of society gets kicked to the unemployment roles.Considering the rest of the planet is taking no initiative well we need to stop putting people out of work that need to be able to pay their bills. I'd love to see a bit more about New Hampshire an Maine in it as we have more fishing than the rest of New England land mass wise. more bays,coves ,rivers,lakes an ponds. Yourk cty and Cumberland county alone have more than Mass an RI combined.

It's tough to get advertisers / distributors up that way. If we had more contributors from Maine <hint-hint> perhaps we could draw in more of a northern audience...

You go digital and then you have to hire people who can discern whether the login and password to the site jibes with the subscriber, or was posted on a website or shared among a bunch of cheap bastids.
This means hiring an employee who typically can command a salary that would make the guys at Fisherman HQ heads explode. Then there is the issue of selling web ads to people in baitshops with missing teeth who are so resistant to change, they've been wearing the same underwear for ten years.

I know that guy too. He sells good gear, but you can't stand too close.
