2011 upgrades complete...
I can never just do one thing... this year it started with the addition of a drop box... which after turning 4 dozen plugs this week end is working exactly as I had hoped...
I removed the remaining 4" pvc branch duct going to the main lathe and replaced it with 6" dropping to 5".. by doing so I gained back almost 1" of lost staic pressure... I also made an enclosure for my main lathe it keeps about 80 of any chips contained in the enclosure and funneled into the collector hood... no dust escapes at all... and in the end.. that is my biggest goal..
Using the same scrap lumber ( 7/16 sheeting) and a 1000 cfm blower I had hanging around I built a AFD ( air filtering devise ) to complement the 650 cfm one I had installed a few years ago.. i fitted it with a 12 X 24" smoke filter ( bought from Penn State industries) and a disposable pre filter.. set up at the opposite end of the shop it keeps the air moving in the boxed in end of the shop...

when I reworked the duct work for the lathe I removed 6' of flex hose going to the floor sweep... by adding a 4" t-Y anda length of 4' pipe I increased the flow dramaticly... it also provides a clean out if the duct should need cleaning... ( I didn't do the math on this one it was a no brainer) I also added a take off for a vacume hose.. this hose is great for cleaning up around the lathe but also serves as a hose connection for the table top band saw and any of the belt sanders...
I have a second lathe that is on casters.. I used to move it around the shop... I gave it a perminant home and it's own hose drop...

I re worked the drill/saw station..originaly both units as well as the paint boothe fed off of a 4" PVC branch ... there were several issues with this... most with the saw... I tried several differant hoods, some mounted on the saw, others mounted on the table... all with the same result... saw dust all over the place and ionterferance with the drill press when I tried to cut angles... I resolved the problem by removing the plastic and re working the drops.. I also moved the drill press closer to the scroll saw giving the chop saw more room... I made a bracket to mount a small hood on the saw ... problem solved..

I removed the paint hood from the main system and ran 4" PVC along the main duct work and out a blast gate i had used priviously to exhaust the hood.. only now it stands independant of the dust collection system...
lastly... I changed the termination of the ductwork on the jointer from a 90 degree elbow to a 30 degree T-Y so as to provide a clean out..

a few shots of the working area...Hopefully this will give some one an idea on improving thier set up... seeing I've allready done the trial and error..

Great job...nice to see someone who like to fuss w/their stuff...I turn on a light downstairs an the old lady screems out "your using to much juice, can't u find something that doesn't use all that elect"...she thinks the juice bill should b 50.00 a month not 200.plus.Told her to start makin candles.

I use a pair of 12" X 12" A/C style allergin/ pollen filters... backed with a cut section of carbon filter ( bought at Grainger) .. I mostly spray water based paints... I ususaly do my priming ( Zinzer cover stain oil base) and scratch coat outside and then bring them inside to dry under the ventilation of the hood..which is vented to the outside.. |

Nice Joe, any chance to get a better pic of your paint booth, im just a we bit curious, also i did see one of the most important pieces of equipment, maybe its super top secret but where is the beer fridge?

I'll take some close ups of the booth if you like...
No beer fridge... things can happen too fast around power tools... so it's coffee and water... of coarse if I'm painting.. well..... |

pretty cheap in Lakeville because we have local Electric company. Cape is friggin ridiculous as i have learned first hand. Imagine what my boss pays per month for electricity with 2 shifts on Cape with all those lights and machines running 18 hours a day, must be scary. I am still trying to figure out all this Cape Cod delivery charge and generation charge crap that ends up being half the friggin bill. WTF is that crap.

sorry for off topic...but discussion of what nstar gouges us for, always gets me riled.. second highest in the nation kw hour charge, and then they double it or better with delivery charges and other add ons.

OT Re power:
Don't come over to the island...Cape Cod seems cheap. The delivery is always way MORE thant the cost to produce. The price varies alot. It was over 30 /kwh a couple years ago...now it is abuout 19 or so.I use about 1500kwh/mo on average. Best thing I ever did was move to clf and led blubs a few years ago...kwh usage dropped 30% and so did my bill.
Most expensive power in the nation is ...CH !!
