Sea Herring Mtg.

Found this in the cc times this am. Fishermen decry herring shortage | CapeCodOnline.com

7-9 pm March 19
Seaport Inn
100 middle street
Fairhaven

7-9pm March 27
Radisson Plymouth
180 mater street, plymouth

Our fall fishery is hugely sea herring dependent and last year they took 150% of their already huge quota (9 million lbs?) from the area off Ptown-Chatham.

The internet link does not include a map, but the newsprint article does. What is striking is that the area South of Nantucket that encompasses The Vineyard, the waters S of Cutty, 'Ganset, BI to LI has no inshore protection at all.

There is also an area that encompasses the inshore area along Cape Ann and CCBay. What the quota (if any) for that is I don't know.

.
How the hell does that happen. I can see when it gets to say 110% before the numbers catch up but 150%......someone's not doing their job.........

I've received two notices recently from RIF&W of regulations filings concering atlantic herring. Area 2 was closed on February 22nd and Area 1B was closed on March 1st. See attached map. Based on the unusually warm winter I think the 2012 quota is almost filled already.
