Good day of Striper fishing, Texas style
forecast was for 70 degrees Friday so I took the day off to go fishing. The forecast changed the night before to mid 50s and I figured I d go anyway. Left the house with the boat at 7am and headed north to Lake Texoma. It was 30 degrees. Launched the boat and headed out of the harbor, as soon as I got on plane I saw birds working and headed over. lots of fish and bait on the screen. Winter technique here is to "deadstick" - you drop a fin S or zoom fluke on 1 oz head straight down and wait for the tap. I thought they were crazy but as soon as i did, i got hits. By 11 am, I had 15 fish in the boat from 4 to 12 lbs, most were around 8. Schoolies, but It was a blast, fish were healthy and fought like hell. water was like glass. the bited died off and went exploring, saw lots of life, most bizarre thing was pelicans, they were all over. great day on the water for Feb 1. today it was 70 and were all in shorts.
One day I have to get the texoma grand slam - striper, largemouth and smallmouth.

Wow I never caught anything on top in the Summer.Other than Canyon all the Bexar County lakes are like bathwater in Summer, though hybrids didn't seem to mind, nor the reds or corvina for that matter.

Looks like a blast, Jim. How far are you from the lake?

That's not too bad of a ride to catch stripers. Are they only in the really big lakes down there or all over? I'd be pretty happy catching 8 - 12 pound fish in freshwater.

John, there are many lakes around here that frequently produce 8-12 lb largemouth bass, no kidding. Google Lake Fork. There are bass outnaments and fishing shows all the time around here.
Stripers have been introduced into a number of lakes years ago and have really taken off. Texoma is unique in that there is a river that feeds the lake and stripers are able to spawn. I dont believe that happens that often in freshwater. They have recorded stripers in the 40-50 lb range. They are rare, but they have been caught. Other lakes are stocked with stripers as well as hybrids. Hybrids are a combination of striper and white bass. These fish get to 10- 12 lbs and are very aggressive. Those are in a number of lakes. White bass are only a few pounds but school up and blitz frequnetly and can be caught in most lakes. texas, like florida spends tons of $$$ on fish and game. Its a big business down here. These bass tournaments are like $100K first prize. I have a lot to learn and explore but great fishing is 12 months a year hre. Largemouths will be pre-spawn in about 3 weeks, so that will turn on.
