St. John & Tortola
Just booked a vacation to St. John for 3 nights and Tortolla fo r3 nights. The hotels and villas were staying are directly on the water with some jettys and coves. Has anyone ever fished from shore at the resorts down there?? I want to fish but dont want to spend $1200 for a half day inshore charter. Wouldnt mind sticking some jacks or something from the beach.
If anyone has any experiences advise would be appreciated.

Never fished there but I will say watch out for the mushroom tea in Tortola  .

Fished the shore in JVD (near Tortolla). plenty of little grouper, snapper and such on bucktails or just a hook/bait. Had one shot of Tarpon come by, and a whole ton of skipjack (blue bonito) tuna around when we were there in '07. Bring small tins, thats what I was lacking.

Fished St Johns all around Caneel bay with a fly rod for a week. Caught barracuda, snappers and fish I did not know. Local showed me some bonefish flats but didn't get to fish them. Also took a half day charter for Mahi Mahi (was March), too rough so we fished in the bay...son caught a 60 lb sailfish, I fought one twice as big for 2 hrs 10 mins and broke off at the boat.(had on 20 lb test as we were going for yellow snapper) Apparently rare to get them in that close. What a blast. Definitely bring a rod!

I have sailed down in the BVIs several times... never fished there but jan/Feb is much windier/rougher than March/April. My favorite places are Jost Van Dyke and Virgin Gorda but you cannot not have a great time on any of the islands... the rum is cheaper than coca cola in the islands so drink up..
Love the steel drums at the beachside bars.. Foxies on Jost Van Dike rocks

I fished tortolla a bit a few years back. There are a ton of flats down there to fish. You can also rent a pretty sweet center console at Nanny Cay. I caught some small tarpon down there on a spinning rod and a bunch of random fish off the beaches with a fly rod. Good luck

No.
I brought my 7ft albright 20lb and it was fine. penn sargus 5000 on it.
Brought my 3pc 8'6" w/ cabo 60 and only cast it a few times. |

Many years ago camping at Cinamon Bay I found a great bonefish flat.
Take road east past Maho bay, road runs along water called Mary Creek.
At intersection where road turns right towards Fredrickstal Ruins there
is a flat on the left where I saw bones tailing. Got a local to find me some
small dead bait fish which I broke up into pieces and scattered around
near edge of a drop off. Being absolutely still, bones would come out
of hiding and start eating the various pieces until they came to the one
which had my hook in it. I would wait for the pick-up and strike. The
run was absolutely fantastic and usually ended with cut line as bones
went over edge of coral into depths. Needed to tighten the drag to get
one on the beach. If you can get some bait and rent a jeep you should
have a blast. Tight lines.
