Good trip, lots of fun in great comfort.
We were short handed. We were looking for another guy or two the last minute and I called 5 guys who are good fisherman to go and not one could make it. Anyway...we left, the owner, me and his friend who had had never been offshore...became a martian about 60 mile offshore. I was all alone in the cockpit with 7 lines. Got to hydro, fished the west wall. Lots of small yellows and mahis about 30" with an occasional bigger fish so we put out the 30's using the light stand up stuff. Wanted to be midway down the canyon on the west wall by sunset and headed in that direction and the plan was to switch back to heavy gear for the sunset troll. Well, we got to about half way down around 3:30 in the afternoon and a nice fish grabbed a bally with an blue/white islander head close to the boat and is looked like a decent fish. It peeled hard for 200 yards and stopped. I figured 40-50# yellow....wrong. It was a big eye and we wrestled with that damn fish for over 3 hours with the 30 before landing it. We had within 50' of the boat 10x only to see it rip another 150 yards straight down time and time again.... took turns on the rod and I had it within sight twice but could not get it within range. This fish kicked our ass. It was almost embarrassing. Finally landed it.
Away went the light gear and out came a full set of 80's.
No swords, a little sloppy at night (east wind) but not too bad on this rig. I got some sleep to wake up an do it agian in the morning. mostly a lot of small yellowfin (countless) We took 6 home +the mahi and bigeye which went about 175 and released the rest. If you put a bally/islander in the water it was consumed. We got covered with 4 at a time at one point. One was a very nice yellow but after about 15 min we lost him.
The warm water was pulling back out of the canyon. It was not that warm. The warmest spots were 73. 61 at the tip. Lots of Weed in the warm water. The chatter on the radio was welker was unfishable with the weed. It seemed the further east you went the worse the weed got. That will change when the patterns settled out post Arthur I think.
Lots of boats out there I think I saw at least 20 guys fishing hydro. I even saw a sail boat trolling with a greenstick!!! that's a first.
Anyway that was the tip. OH!! my next boat will have a teaser reel set up...those are friggin awesome..the sight of the teasers from the tower was amazing. when fish hits...you just push a button and the teasers all pull up to the riggers. Very sweet.
Plan to be on-board again during the new OB offshore tourney in a week and a half.

Awesome
I can't wait to go back out.
I'm sure we could put a crew together with a little notice if he is looking in the future
