New owners at West Marine

I was told a private equity group bought the company and is getting it back to a marine hardware store that will not be undersold. No more bathing suits, fashion, etc. If you find an advertised low price and bring it in on your phone, they supposedly will match...... I ignore their emails for the most part but may have to go in to check out the local store to see what they have left of the stuff they are blowing out and no longer carry...

Any price, pretty much anywhere.

Guys on THT have been talking about getting all their stuff there by just shopping the internet for the lowest price.

WEST MARINE has always matched prices... You just had to know to ask. it was their policy... probably because they know their prices are to damn high!!

I went in there to purchase new teleflex steering kit for my boat priced at $178 but the cashier looked it up on her computer and found it on sale on Amazon for $139.. I paid the $139.. She said it was new for them to be able to accept amazon prices in their price match deal.

I have a gold level port supply account through them and even with that discount, Defender marine always comes in a little lower. Think of how many mom and pop ship chandleries West Marine put out of business.. just like Home Depot destroyed independent hardware stores.. evil empire

I want to support small business. But when it comes to marine supply there simply is none.

I only do West as a last resort. Hopefully they can turn the company around.

for me .. those guy's are a on line purchase.. when I bought my Bronwell boat stands they had the best price..I've bought a few other things from them as well..

I have to drive by West marine to get to work/ home every day... I don't buy much from them.. their hardware is all made in China and is of terrible quality...

I get all my hardware from Fastenall or McMaster Carr

west marine loves to sell extended warranties...but wait until you try and collect.. I bought the Extended warranty on an Icom VHf radio... 2 months out of factory warranty the LCD background went to full dim..when I brought it back they put me through the ringer.. they told me it was my responsibility to contact Icom about the issue.. after a lengthy "discussion" with the manager I threatened to call Corporate.. only then did they relent and give me a radio.. I had a simualr instance a few years earlier...yesterday I bought a couple of crappy 40 dollar speakers to replace the old ones ( 10 years old) so I can listen to the sox while I fish...the girl behind the counter tried( almost insisted) on me getting the extended.. pleading that it was only 8 bucks... my reply was " sweetie... these things are guaranteed for 2 years.. if they last that long Ill replace them but I'm not spending 1/6th of the price for an extended warranty for a crappy set of speakers.."I thought she was going to cry when I kept saying NO ..her manager was standing right behind her.. so I know they are pushing them so sell..

A good run is better than a bad stand!

I've been using port supply for years, mainly just for odds and ends I need to pick up immediately. I can stop byDefender on my way to and from the boat from home.
