WTH is this???

Went to my 6th grade Grand Daughter's band program tonight where they stared the program with the National Anthem. While most people stood up no one under the age of, I'm guessing, 55 put there hand over their heart. All the older people did except one older guy who didn't even remove his hat. I've attended a lot of my older Grand Daughter's programs 10 years ago where everybody stood and put their
hand or hat over their heart at it's playing.
WTH kind of example are these parents and Grand Parents sending to our kids for the respect of our flag and country? What happened to Patriotism in the last 10 years?

Patriotism went when half the country decided we need to be Europe west. This whole country began to hit the skids with the "Me Generation".

we RANK number 36 in Math Skills

So much MONEY gets diverted to foreign countries "problems"
that there isn't much left over for AMERICA....
thus reducing the "PRIDE" level to a puddle
instead of an Ocean.

JB, I agree. It's a lost generation that will never know the feeling of gratitude for being born in this country, it's liberties and freedoms and the ones who sacrificed their life and limb to keep us free. Gratitude is one of the best feelings you can have, beats self-centeredness hands down.

Write a letter to the local paper explaining exactly what you saw. Sometimes that is all that is needed to get the ball rolling is a little information. Some of these people might not even realize that is the proper etiquette....they may think that you're supposed to just stand.

Just a thought

this might make you feel a little better...I was at my daughter's swim meet at the Y in Wareham recently and they were about to play the National Anthem but something happened to the sound so the meet official, on the fly said...."well, our team will sing the National Anthem"...... the kids on the team who were all gathered around the flag which one of them was holding at the end of the pool broke into a perfect rendition...it was awesome...most of them were 12 and under...

And they sang better than the overpaid twits that have been performing at huge national sporting events. Wish I knew someone from the site was there..

My wife sang the National Anthem at the Autism 5k in Colt State Park this fall. I'd post a video but I botched the filming

Good thoughts TDF, but the responsibility for teaching respect should come from the parents which is easily taught by example. Too bad more kids aren't part of Boy Scouts where they learn the meaning of Patriotism along with self reliance and respect. You are to be saluted for the time and effort you put into your Troop.

BUT DAVE!
You are over expecting their intelligence to be capable of Doing that.
It's NOT in their HEADS to begin with.... So Someone from YOUR Generation
that has had it Instilled into every fiber of their being has to
show them what it means.... via words , via the media... and...
i can not think of anyone more qualified to do that than you.

Rav, very kind of you to say, I'm humbled, but unless I could come up with some kind of rap music
and sing it on MTV, most wouldn't understand. I would have to consult with Clammer as to what lyrics to use.
Everybody knows old guys don't know what they're talking about anyway.

Don't under estimate the youth of today....a lot of them will get it when showed it. I still learn things once in awhile from the boys.....they aren't as lost of a cause as some think.

Agree, they do get a lot of bad press, but in working with JR and SR High kids
for over 25 years I've found the new generation of kids, now between the ages of
12-20 yrs., have a lot on the ball and offer hope. Wish I could say that for some of the parents.
They are the ones who have the most influence, or should I say, should have.
Kids learn what they live.
