Seeking knowledge 1 - fishing with Herring in RI

Once the baby comes in May, my fishing days will be few. I'm looking to only target big bass next year. Changing my strategy.
I am intersted in using live herring from the shore in RI. I have read that this tecnique is used in the Warren and Barrington rivers in the spring. Has anyone fished RI from shore with herring? Can you buy them from bait shops? Any spots where this method produces?
Thanks for your help!

Narrow River is a good spot to toss live herring. You have to catch them yourself can only buy frozen.

Lightbulb

There was a time when all I could think about was HERRING. I'd book charter trips on MV a year in advance to drag a live buckie over the bottom. Fun stuff, actually saw Buddy Vanderhoop chop the head off of a live herring.

I have to say, it was hard weaning myself off the live stuff and switching over to the artificial stuff.

Have any of you guys tried chumming with cut up pieces of herring (fresh or frozen) and throwing swimming plugs?

Much more fun IMO.

Eben, the only live bait or any bait for that matter I ever used was live eels.

I know there are times when the herring run and are the prime feed for bass. I saw some videos of catching bass on herring and it looked pretty cool. Im just not sure where to begin.
I live pretty close to Barington and Warren Ma and I know that at certain times of the year the herring run. Im just looking for a start. From what I can gather, I guess I just cant pick up a dozen at the bait shop.

WW - Have you had success doing that? I have fished next to guys that were throwing live herring and they were hooking up ever other cast. I was throwing lures and not a hit, when the stripers are on the herring runs it seems like they are very picky and that is all they want.

RIJIMMY, find out where the herring ladders are around you and go down there when people are netting them. Net some and take them for a swim somewhere that looks fishy! That place that you and I both fish at would be a great place, as well as all of the notorious "spring spots" in RI.

IMO, those rubber storm lures are so good, I think you could do just as well with those dunked in a little smelly jelly.

I think there's a herring run about halfway between Tiverton and
Sakonnet on Naragansett bay. Don't know if it's legal to get them
there. It may be too far to carry more than 3 or 4 in an aerated
bucket to the Warren River.
