Where exactly are the blues?

I am trying to have someone from France hook onto one of these beauties before he goes back.

Any suggestions for fishing from foot and parking.

Is this the same French fellow of Striper and Plymouth beach fame from a few years ago??

My guess is that these fish were South Cape, somewhere between SC Beach and Poppy but that's only a guess...

No, this is his first time in the USA. I'm just trying to get him hooked up with our world famous fishing for bluefish and striped bass.

The only problem my boat is in the shop and I only have access from shore. Any specific locations to find the bluefish this early would help.

Thanks ahead

Yes they were there again last night. Had a great time. fish were up to about 8lbs.

Flyfisher - Go down to Cotiut or Oregon beach, check your map and look for fisherman, you will know that the fish are there. DUsk or dawn are your better times. Good luck, hope you ge into them.

GS you wimp you left too early, we picked up another 25 or 30 fish after you left!!!! You better start working out those arms, I think the boat fishing may have made you a little weak, LMAO

SM, So sorry I didn't get your email or call till about 11 last night when we got home. Check your email.

John

Are those flats wadable, I am not familiar with the flats. I found a road named Oregon Way is this area you are talking about?

FF - I've actually never fished it (Oregon) so I can't be certain. I know that it is pretty close to the flats.

My biggest problem with most of those South Cape spots are that I don't know the street names. I can recognize the streets during the day and at night, I wind up driving and turning around when I realize that I screwed up... and eventually find the spot :P

The flats are wadeable, best at low tides, and they do run out pretty far, almost a half mile, but it can be tough to learn exactly where to wade. You need to walk a bit to the right from the lot to get on the edge of the flats. The flats run out in a slight left bend from the beach where it starts off wide and then narrows towards the end, where it drops off quick. Quick enough where you can get into to trouble if you are not careful. This is also a location where you should have good, safe wading equipment INCLUDING WADER BELT.

Also, if you get into one of the spectacular bluefish blitzes known to that area, you need to be real careful when releasing the fish. Picture a rabid 6 pund blue going bezerk on the end of your Ranger or Multi-trebbled Chrome Popper. You have water past your belt line, your rod tucked under your arm, your surfbag over your shoulder and that P'oed blue thrashing away. You need to be real carefull removing that fish. Have your pliers readily handy (as well as a backup set)

Many of us MSBA folks remember a certain past club president nearly loose a thumb PERMENANTLY to a blue that jumped up as he was removing the hook. Literaly, he almost lost his thumb due to infection and such...

FlyFisher, that place is a true blast but it can really be hairy unless you are there with people that have fished it before or you take a very strong, cautious approach....

Good luck,

John

Thanks John

From what I am reading the flats are near a parking lot, is this correct. Is this a parking lot for the beach?

I wonder if the striped bass cruise these flats like Monomoy.

Flyfisher, Oregon Beach is at the very end of Main street going into Cotuit, can't miss it as you can go any furthur due to a private road at the end.

Wading Advice for all, you should only be out wading this area, on the last 3 hour of the out going tide and the 1st 3 hour of the incoming tide. NOTE: tide at Cotiut is 1 hr and 17 min after Boston tide. Please be careful down there. The current can be strong, you should always take a buddy with you, especially with fishing for blues, as JohnR said, when you are out there and in the water you are a long way from a Beach to land that fish. If you grab the steel leader, with rod tucked under you arm and get your thumb and 1st finger, just under the fishes gill plate and hold him tight and under control, then get the hook out with your pliers. We always barb down our hooks they are much easier to get out, and I recommend single hook lures only. If you get into them heavy it will save you alot of time and more time for catching.

Good luck and good fishing!!!

She's absolutely correct! The only thing I would add is that if you are going to fish specific plugs for bluefish that have treble hooks (read = disposable), don't bother changing the hooks when you can cut off the two unnecesary hooks of each trebble, leaving the bottom hook available... Just makes it easier...
