harwich is looking to shut down their herring run for the next few years...some of my biggest stripers come in the spring on herrin,,an no I'm not telling where.

Is there legit reason for it or is it political? RI tried doing the same here at 2 runs in Warwick. The "science" was far from reasonable & some of it was witch doctory. On the other hand, there WAS negative & harsh extra pressure on these runs which seems to have been properly addressed

Harwich SUX. they took federal money to repair their run and refuse to abide by the federal rules. I was ready to send a shell fish warden swimming 2 years ago. total d__k, then come to find out he had no authorization being there.

the reason being is theres no fish left, the water levels had been so low for so long , the fry never made it back out to the sea..their looking at 2006-7 for any numbers to return....an the fact that there were just to many people from shall we say,out of town taking hundreds at a time when only 12 were aloud. the black market for live herrin was hot, people an shops would pay anything for them,,now we're all paying the price.

Ain't no herring in the Pembroke run any more neither. And the run down the street from me in Weymouth cut back to 6 a day last year

I grew up in Pembroke and they have a herring fry every year. Guess where they get them for the fry now......the Weymouth run.

With all due respect, I did not understand your point regarding the Weymouth run.

The few days that the limit was cut back to 6 were because ther were only so many fish in the pool and the assistant wardens were doing there best to make sure that as many persons could get some Herring as possible.

My fishing club (MSBA) cleans that run every year. I know the Warden and the three assistant wardens personally. I think that run is managed very well.

Many of us are forgetting that last Spring the weather was very cold and poor. At the Weymouth run there were plenty of herring. The problem was that the open times mid day were for the most part cloudy and cold. The majority of the fish were moving right before sunset when the sun hit the run directly raising the water temps.

I know that there are problems with other runs but I guess I just wanted to defend the weymouth run.

Also, I wil acknowledge that I cause Herring problems for others. I had permits for 5 runs last year. We all should probably only have a permit for one.

well, if you want to get a non-resident permit for middleboro this year you better get your self addressed stamped envelope in to them by the end of the month because their herring permit lottery is being held in mid february...

Last year I sold my tank and vowed not to fish candy again. If the run is that decimated then it should be shut down for a while. As far as the 6 and 12 rule they wanted to implement that is illegal. Since they took federal money there is no favoritism allowed. Plus with taking the feds money a person was allowed 25 on take days. This was a great run, I am not sure it all can be blamed on low water. 3 years ago there were so many herring in the ponds that the water was" dying" The herring would go up and lay their eggs on top of other eggs that were already there and so it went Well when too many layers of eggs built up, then you couple that with the low water you get a high mortality rate. Part of this I blame on the town with mismanagement problems. Yes I did witness on a few occaissions people taking hundreds which I thought was kind of stupid. I would go to the run with a fishing partner or my wife and take 50 baits (I mean how many do ya need). My livewell set up could handle this many comfortably with minimal loss.

Bass candy fishing is the nutz and a real rush but not worth it . Everybody wants to be your friend ( I was getting calls all the time when I fished them) But nobody wants to help with the rest of it. OH well didn't mean to get off track....

Patrick, I just assumed that numbers were down because of the cutback the few times I went down there. Glad to hear that's not case.
