scuff coat
what do you experts use for a scuff coat over white? I use spar urethane for everything else but the white gets a piss color tinge to it-I have some rust-o-leum crystal clear enamel-will that work?????
thanx

I don't consider myself an expert, but I use the spar urethane and just apply a light coat. Too much and it yellows. I use Helsman.

system 3 clear coat tagger?
I believe Mike F uses system 3 clearcoat and I think he uses krylon paints too and does the krylon clearcoat for a scratch coat.

Larry Its the coat between paint and epoxy .. some guys (me) spray the plug with Helmans spar urethane then if you want to wire or whatever you won't damage your paint..PLUSS you take a plastic 00 scuff pad and lightly scratch or scuff it for better epoxy bond .. If you spray the helmans to heavy like I always do ,you get a yellow tint to all your colors ,, others are using Krylon for scratch or scuff coat ,,but half of us are using systems 3 the other half envirotex and the other half other products ..,,thats where it gets confusing whats working or not .. we're talking apples and oranges..

Do you guys do you wiring before the envirotex? From taggers post it sounds like you wire in between the clear coat and the epoxy. I was planning on adding swivels, grommets, and wire last.

u can do it either way. I prefer to put the plug together after the scuff coat-partly because I like to get a little epoxy on the tail end of the wire and also over the kerf cuts, but mainly because I daisy chain four plugs together on a spinner and having the wire in makes it easier.

So if I do the wiring last is there any reason to use the scuff coat?

I try and wire last..I don't like when epoxy seperates on arse I want it epoxyied under arse grommet started doing that not to long ago .. Tadpoles I wire before because I like lip epoxied in and wire goes thru it.. pikies I screw lip and don't wire thru till after epoxy .. nice pushing epoxy under those belly grommets without barrel swivel there although straw thing works well ..

the scuff coat isn't meant to protect the plug from gorilla mitts during the wiring process-it is applied and lightly scuffed with a scotch brite pad to give the envirotex something to grip. u can hit your painstakingly lovingly applied paint job with the pad b4 the envirotex but you'll, well, scuff it up and possibly damage the paintjob. the scuff coat is meant to be scratched up since it is only clear urethane or enamel or whatever. ya dig?

Anybody ever try wiping down with Final Kleen by Dupont after createx drys to clean hand oil smudges and then enirontex? Talked to 2 airbrush guys who said thats what they do without needing to scuff the createx before epoxy.

I tried wiping down a plug painted with createx with alcohol, once Smeared the paint Probably would have taken it all off if I kept doing it.
