new to braided line please help - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

hello all

I have always been a mono guy, but I recived some power pro 20# as a gift and I fiqured I would give it a try. I will mostly be using it to chunk herring or live line some mackeral. puting it on a baitrunner 35 or 4500 and fishing from a boat. So my questions are backing, how much and what# how do i tie it to the braid, btw I have 150 yds of braid, and I am assuming I need a floro or mono leader, how long and what # for that? And do I tie that on the same way? I think I dug out all my gear a little to early again this year it only makes the waiting worse!!! Any help would be great.

with that braid I would use 20Lb mono or 20 lb Dacron as a backing. I would use 150 yds of it if it were mono which i would reccomend but if you use Dacron I would use 100-125 ydrs. load the rest with the braid- making sure it is within 1/8 of inch from the edge of the spool. Than put a flourcarbon leader in the 15- 20 lbs range of about 10-15 feet. I might suggest you buy more braid and load up the spool with all braid. What is going to happen is that your braid will break and you will be left with a lot of backing. but if you use all braid you wont have that problem. You might go for 30-50lb braid- and use a 20 lb leader. so the leader breaks off. Also with the no stretch of braid you feel so much more make sure you give the fish a good 5 count if you use circle hooks otherwise you will not hook up. Braid is a great line but you have get use to it like anything new. Good luck and tight lines

I wouldn't put that power pro on a Baitrunner. You won't like the results. However, I would put on some Fireline, and never think about using mono again.

I use power pro 50 test you will feel everything even a blade of grass but be careful if your not paying attention and the braid is on your wet finger it will cut to the bone I have the scars to prove it, later LINK

thanks for the ideas, what about the knot, I have been trying a back to back uni, seems ok is there anything better?

The best knot their is for braid is palomar knot also the easiest knot to tie. If yu are bait fishing and have some extra money and like the penn line up- buy a penn 965. It's a great reel for chunking and trolling and it will out cast your 965 with a chunk on it. If you load it up with 50lb test braid you can troll a umbrella rig and you will great success.

I use various braids on all my conventional rods, cept leadcore and wire. I'll NEVERS go back to mono.

I put some gudebrod braid 45# on my SS5500 and although great and you feel everything you have to be very aware that at the end of the cast on the first crank that the line doesn't wrap around the drag knob. If you don't catch it the next cast your done

...I believe it is because the braids are so flexible.

150 yds is plenty even too much for live lining. With that much braid backing has many options. Some 17# mono or 20# dacron.

DO NOT CARRY THE NOSTRECH ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SPOOL. I HAVE SEEN WHERE THIS STUFF IS SO SLIPPERY THAT ALL YOUR LINE SPINS ON THE SPOOL AND ONE THINKS THAT YOUR DRAG IS BROKE. SINCE THERE IS NO STRETCH LINE AROUND A HARD SPOOL IS HARD TO TIGHTEN. BACKING REQUIRED.

I use the uni alot between mono/floro and braid. I like to tie the polamar knot to my hooks with all my lines because the line goes thru the hole twice and more durable.

I tried pp on a baitrunner 4500, and had major problems especially with digging in. The baitrunner doesn't lay down the line well enough to handle pp, spiderwire, and the like, but it does like the Fireline which tends to do well on braid unfriendly reels. I've used up to 30 lb. test Fireline on a 4500 with great results.

Just ordered up some 50 lb PP last night.

I use 50 lb PP on my bait runner it works fine for me. I never had a problem. Like Link said, make sure you tape up your index finger prior to casting.
