Massachusetts recreational fishing licence?

Just like a freshwater licence.

Most people say the ocean should be free, but nothing else is free
these days and the money could go to purchasing land, making fishing piers and other things fisherman want to see the government do, but cost $$$ (like hireing people to patrol herring runs, cleanup and restoration).

I never thought I'd ever be in favor of a saltwater licence since it might be unenforceable (well maybe not, most fishing spots are well known) but the more I think about it, the more I think a recreational licence is a pretty good idea.
I just wonder what a recreational licence would allow?

I would think boat recreational guys who fish with their buddies wouldn't like it (buddies would have to have a licence), or the guy that only fishes a couple times a year might not like it, but a serious recreational fisherman who fishes whenever they can, is a good fisherman, and appreciates fishing, might not mind payiing 25-50 dollars for a recreational licence every year.

That would be a real good way to alienant all your friends and relatives who maybe like going with you a couple times a year. You'll never have anybody to help you pull the anchor up.

The boat registration fee, excise taxes, sales tax on gear is far enough.

Sure, where do I sign up for that "recreational saltwater fishing license"? 25.....50 bucks? Hey, no problem.....I was looking for a way to further hemorrhage money!!!

Hey I bought a new book today written by a guy who calls himself, of all things, Striprman! The book is called "How To Piss Off Your Fellow Recreational Fisherman, And Win Friends On A New Fishing Related Web-Site"! Dance, Dammit....Dance!

OK....don't anybody move a finger on those keyboards........this is an official thread hi-jacking.....do as I say and no one will be harmed! This thread is now in the hands of "The Recreational Fisherman Against The Inhumanity To Those On Striped-Bass By The Posting Of Inane And Ridiculous Threads By Striprman Organization!" Thats right....you heard me....this is an "official" hi-jacking of a thread! If everyone co-operates....no one will be harmed and we can return you all safely to your web-sites shortly! Alright Striprman....the jig is up....come out from behind that couch before I have to come over there..... Beachwalker.....please confiscate that computer that Striprman is hiding over there and we can be on our way and return these fine people to their normal everyday way of life, and, due to our heroic act of taking over this thread, they will no longer have to continue being bombarded with cruel inane drivel (that was a good word Beachwalker, I hope you don't mind me using it?). Yes....thats it....smash that computer and we can be on our way shortly! One last piece of business....Driver.....turn this thread around and return it to its point of origin! Beachwalker....our work is finished here....for now! Rest assured my fellow S-Bassers.....whenever there is excessive thread posting.....where ever there is talk of "not minding" paying for a saltwater recreational fishing license......BigFish will be there to foil the evil-doers!

We now return your computers to your control!

Just think of all the good things that the monies that are raised
would do. More money for law enforcement, recreational fishing piers, public access areas, herring run restoration and cleanup, building reefs. The same type of things the freshwater and sportsmans licences do. 25-50 bucks is the cost of a couple plugs, surely it would be money well spent if is directed towards improving fishing.

My honest opinion on this topic Striprman is that we pay too GD much in taxes as it is! We have all of those things that you mention now and I still have $50.00 in my pocket. I was at a Herring Run cleanup this morning (doing my part) and I do many other things that are helpful towards our fisheries in the course of the year and you want me to part with more of my money? More money for law enforcement, recreational fishing piers and herring run restoration.....please, the only place any of that money would go is into these crooked politicians pockets or transferred into the general fund just as that crooked no-good Sh*t Romney tried to do with all the dough generated from the freshwater licenses. I already pay for a freshwater license, that in itself should cover both as far as I am concerned. Pay 25-50 dollars for a saltwater license and we would get what? I would still be cleaning out herring runs with the other folks who generously donate their time to do so because none of all of the money I already pay in taxes ever seems to get where it is supposed to go. Excise tax goes to repair roadways????? Have you noticed the condition of the roadways in the state of Mass lately? Please, spare me! If things get much worse around here, I am gonna find myself patching roadways in my spare time along with cleaning herring runs.

Striprman ~

It is wishfull thinking any money raised will go to the efforts proposed, can you say GENERAL FUND.

Our Governor has already tried to hijack conservation $ raised from hunting licenses. Does anyone know the status of that?

Do not fall into the trap.

I believe it was Gov. Weld who said they will have to pry the gun from my cold dead fingers before we have a saltwater license.

That is how our gov. should be.

Along with SB gamefish status, its like throwing PETA a bone. One more step to no fishing, one more step to taking away our freedoms.

Well BF, it appears you don't think a rec licence would be good because your boat/ beach buddies wouldn't like it, any other reasons? I used to be against the idea of a licence for the same reasons, but the more I think about it, the more I like it. Money for cleaning up polluted areas, improving docks, purchacing land on tidal rivers....

I understand that alot of people feel a saltwater fishing licence is just one more tax, but if the money raised improved fishing, it would be money well spent.

Striperman,
You MUST be a frigin democrat!!!

We've got enough fees we pay to fishing / boating
Boat registration fee, mouring permit fee, excise tax, slip fee, beach access permits, public ramp launch fee, the outragous cost of gas at a marina,
If I'm not mistaken, our state wanted to take a lot of those funds and eliminate a lot of programs they support reciently until gov Romney put an end to it.

striprman - - go back and read PNG's post. read it more than once.

The money would never end up we think it should go and be most effective, rather to some irrelevent government foolishness.

For you to even to consider seriously a SW license makes you either totally uninformed on the facts, or just strirring up the crowd for fun.

Striprman....it is not "my buddies" who are against it....can't you read? I AM AGAINST IT FOR ALL OF THE REASONS STATED AND THEN SOME!

"Money for cleaning up polluted areas"? What planet are you from man? I told you I was out all morning cleaning out a herring run which I do every year (BEETLE and Raider Ron were there also). You honestly believe that would change because we pay a saltwater fishing license fee??????? Wake up and smell the coffee for cryin' out loud!

That anchor proposal still stands....let me know if you want in!

Damn!!!!!!!

$20.00 parking sticker ( so I can Park at the ramp)

$10.00 for the Herring permit

give me hell when I'm done , I don't care.

In Mass what does the fresh water bass fisherman get for $27.50? NADA Have any of you seen the pond and lake ramps, they are pathetic. many are 4x4 or you ain't fishin. Most every freshwater bass fisherman is catch and release while in salt many keep their catch. If they can convince me that the moneys from a salt water licences where going to improve our future then I'm all for it. If you ever fished in other states you know how strict salt water licence are....IMO for a good reseaon.

Freshwater fishermans $27.50 is going to help repare the ramps we use, and that ain't right.

there's more

Highly migratory species permit $ 22.00, & if I wanna sell some tuna there's the commercial/recreational boat permit $130.00 and how about the EXCISE TAX ( road use tax) that I gotta pay on the boat?

hey castn4bass.
you can get about 22 cents back on "every gallon" of fuel you pay road tax on.
last year my refund was over 400 bucks for fuel tax.
very easy to do.
