OK, I am another newbie. Been lurking for a coupla days and for several hours now...lotsa good info here and what appears to be a good bunch of fisherpeople. I fish in and around Cape Ann mostly from shore due to being boatless. I am a fully addicted striper hunter and am still in search my first 30 LB'er, sadly. All the time spent out on the rocks last season has put my marriage in the same place... on the rocks ... so I am looking to somehow find a balance with my two passions and time to work as well! I am also an info-hound and always looking for the inside scoop and the latest and greatest secrets....

Looking forward to frequenting this site and perhaps will see some of you folks at the shorelines...

Hi,

I like Halibut point state park. That place is fun to fish at.
You should buy your wife/girlfriend a fishing rod so she can come with you.
I guess I'm lucky, my wife comes with me, she likes being outdoors as much as me. If she doesn't come with me, for whatever reason, she always asks "how was the fishing ?, did you catch anything ?" and if I decide to bring one home, she will cook it to.

I'm not sure to what extent your fishing is causing problems with your marriage - it's hard to pick up subtle humor through text, but my advice is: don't screw up your personal life over fishing.
People who start out and then find that they really like the sport tend to go way too much.
Find out what the best condition set for the places you fish is and concentrate your time when the odds are best.
Early season fever strikes before the fish arrive - chill out until there is a chance for a good fish.....no point in pissing off your significant other and getting skunked to boot.

Cape Ann as you know has allot of structure [rocky coast] which them fish like.

Some times it is best to take the wife. If she does not like to fish she can read a book or just enjoy the secenary!!!

Dr. Crafty concurs with Joe's earlier diagnosis - if you're after a second opinion. It's a virulent case of striped bass fever exacerbated by it's appearance in the adult male. Tsk tsk tsk.

My advice is to concentrate your efforts on the most productive times of the day. There's gonna be a window of opportunity in every tide when your chances are best, given a number of other factors. It's only like brain sugery if you can't read a tide chart or if you can't look up in the sky to see what the moon phase is, or tell which direction the wind is coming from.

In terms of your significant other, take Dr. Lyons' advice. Don't find yourself undergoing a radical cashectomy over a #%^$&#$* fish. It's really not worth it. If you take care of business at home, you'll find less resistance to your forays. Looking at tide charts you can even tell her when you plan to fish. If moon and tide aren't right, you're just going out for casting practice anyway. There are exceptions to that rule, but they are exceptions. Try a little tenderness, ya know? Ya gotta stop and think that it takes a special woman (like Mrs. Crafty) who really loves ya to put up with this happy horse****.

Thanx to all for the great welcome and the advice as well. Sry if this isn't the place for dear Abby. Mrs. Cognito does like to fish but does not feel the need to do it 24/7. I guess I just need to chill a bit this season and buy some good blinds, ya see I live on atop a big hill overlooking the harbor and have a direct view of many-a-rod bent over. I watch the herring boats unload and bilge out hundreds of gallons of oily herring sludge into the water and just know that the cows will be there. Add to that the calls from all my single or retired fishing buddies who have nothing better to do than to wet lines day & night and I simply get overwhelmed. This year is gonna be 52% of me to the wife and 48% to the fish.

Oh, BTW I heard an unconfirmed rumor that there were a few schoolies taken in the river (annisquam) behing the Candy House yesterday.

sorry! about the view you have...that must really suck seing all the bass down there rioting in the harbor, it is soooo cruel we might have to have a feel better raffle in your name even.
