newbie heading to Newport this weekend

I've been searching for a decent striper fishing chat room for weeks!

I received all sorts of saltwater gear for x-mass this year and I'm planning my first trip of the season starting tomorrow. I'm heading down Newport and would love to hear some reports on what's hot down there right now.

If there are any Jerry Garcia fans out there throw some advice my way and I'll send a FREE a copy of an acoustic show from 1982.

Welome you are not going to get info here on specific spots, at least not on the main board, maybe thru a private message you might. I suggest you hit one of the tackle shops in Newport and ask them where are some good early season spots. Oh and I am a big Dead fan but I don't know Newport that well otherwise I would send you a private message.

Hi Drinkie, you did not break any rules but people get slammed out here for asking for specific spots. Its just part of the fun. This thread will turn into a big debate on sharing spots vs. keeping quiet....

I can't help you on Newport, the onthewater.com web site has a weekly report and that may have some news on Newport. The fish are showing up in our waters now and things should continue to improve. Newport is a deep water spot so that may heat up later than other areas in RI.

Fair enough.

I wasn't looking for secret spots more along the lines of, am I to early in the season to be heading to Rhode Island?

The first three to send me an email with their postal address I'll miracle you this Jerry Garcia show.

No advice needed.

I would head to RI, maybe not Newport yet. There are fish reports in many of the early spring spots such as the west wall in Jerusalem and the Matunuck area. Its pretty warm out today so its looking good.

Drikine - welcome to the site. If you are new to saltwater fishing, you might want to try the beaches instead of the rocks, different gear is NEEDED as is the buddy system.

Couple tips for spring striper fishing - go where the wind is in your face and you can cast to whitewater - use something like a zoom fluke, little kastmaster, white bucktail jig with grub tail...

See, good info and no spots

Newport
I haven't been over there in a while since there is so much shore line on the west side of the Bridges for me to fish. I don't know if they alow fishing, but I would try to find a relatively safe spot off the rocks along the cliff walk. You can park over by Newport 2nd beach, I believe. Sorry, it's been a while.

Welcome Drinkie. Good luck in Newport.

That is a creative new way to get spots from people-- Bartering off some decent music. The Grateful Dead allowed and encouraged folks to tape thier music. I live on the North Shore and am very willing to share or even take you to some very productive spots if you can produce some bootleg Kinks music!!!

I'll take a look around for some Kinks.

North shore is nice. Most of my saltwater knowledge comes from my brother in-law who lives in Newburyport. Unfortunately my wife and he got into some kind of family tiff and I somewhat lost my connection.

I'll let you know I find.

A wealthy man goes into a bar and sees an extremely attractive young lady.

He approaches her and asks, "Would you sleep with me for one hundred dollars?"

"Absolutely NOT!" she says.

"How about two hundred?" he asks.

"No!" she replied.

"Well," the gentleman says, "How about a million?"

The young lady hesitates, seeming to think it over and the wealthy gentleman says, "All right, now that we've established what you are, let's go back to haggling about the price."

Welcome Drinkie,
a nice way to meet a lot of people from this site is at one of the legs of the four leg tournament. I met and fished with a lot of people last spring at one of the legs.

I would fish the First Beach side near the Cliff Walk or the Sachuest corner on Second Beach in the afternoon. You'll have a high tide at around 3:20 or so so I would fish on either side of that. Fish have been taking Storms and small flies according to Peter G in the store and customers reports. Im sure you'll do fine with any small bucktails as well. People have taken fish here in the last few weeks. Nothing big but its good fun. Good Luck. Swing by the store and say hello. 561 Thames St.
