Poison Ivy
Can you continue to catch it from yourself? ....can the 'ooze' give you more blues? If you scratch one spot and then touch another...will it spread??
1st time for me, and I can't shake it. Seems more and more rashy-bubbles are showing up...any suggestions? I haven't seeked medical attention...just putting Calamari lotion on it for now...and the stuff made by "Band Aid"..itch relief or sumthing...
I've heard gasoline, chlorine, vinegar...you'd think I'd be making a bomb ....
Been almost 2 weeks, how long before it gets OFF ME!!

Maybe its the calamari lotion
I have (luckiliy) never had it but I was under the impression you can spread it by scratching......
make sure EVERYTHING you touched when you got the ivy is washed....the oils can be on clothing, shoes or gear and you can get it from that too......

DON,T SCRACTH. or it will get infected. i use lye soap to wash with and it dries the skin very well which is what you want to do. or take a dip in the saltwater.

Thanks for the input -
I've helped clear plenty of wooded lots before and NEVER even had the hint of this stuff...and I'm SURE it was present at the other lots because I'm the one who removed it because my buddy was "alergic" to it and I wasn't ....I don't know what happened. How did I catch it now, but not then.....who knows.....whatever.
The worst part is, I haven't been putting hardly ANY fishing time in at all. ...I need some stress relief..... I'm either working, cutting, stacking, working, working or working......UGGHHHHH!!!! ....and then Goose calls me up and gets me going even worse with his nights fishing reviews.
Anyone have the phone number for the Samaritans Hotline??

Poison Ivy Facts
Quote:
Common Myths about Poison Ivy.......Scratching poison ivy blisters will spread the rash.
False.
The fluid in the blisters will not spread the rash. The rash is spread only by urushiol.

Doesn't seem that way, but I guess they know better than we do.....

Bloo I get that crap bad. Take a bath in oatmeal, it will help some, and cvs sells a soap called TECNU. it helps dry out the blisters. If it gets real bad go to the docs get the shot and pills. Scratching will only infect it, not spread it. However any tools, or clothes you were using or wearing will still have the oil on it. Wash the clothes in hot water, and wash the tools outside, then oil them. Also you may want to change your bedsheets, and use your towels only once.

Apply salt water helps dry, I know you know that . Oat meal packets (pharamcy) Like Specialist said.... soak in that.
If its real bad just get a shot and get it over with....stops spreading and dries it quicker.

urushiol.....read something yesterday, that word is Japanese for Varnish. They used to paint the gold in temples with the stuff to punish people for stealing it.

A couple of weeks ago the Providence Journal had an article on Poison Ivy. Do a search. Very interesting. I've had it bad, I mean bad two times in like 5 years. I had it all over my body, on my face and on my Johnson and not my outboard. I was all done for like a week and a half. You gotta get the shot right away. If you wait it takes a little longer to help you out. Sounds like the guys previously read the article too.

technu works wonders
so does ivyblock (as a preventative)
my 15yr old reacts badly to ivy.
Just scratching does not spread it.
It can cause it to open and get infected.
It can appear to spread because the reaction can be enhanced. Also, if you have not cleaned off the oils you can cross contaminate and in a sense "spread" it.
However, the spreading is because you still have the oil around and did not clean properly. It is NOT becuase you scratched.
If you have the oil on your clothes (boots/gloves) you can get it again days later.
It takes 20 minutes to be absorbed but it can take 2 days to show up. So, after first contact - clean up with cool water and some bleach or technu.
follow the directions exactly. (wash twice or more as directed).
wash contaminated clothing promptly.
if it gets real bad call doctor they will decide if a prescription steroid is needed to resolve it.

Update:
I gave in....it's been 18 days and I LOVE getting my back scratched...pppprrrrrrrrrrrrrrr........ ....so you can imagine how much I enjoy scratching all this chit, arms, legs, chest ....open sores scattered all over my shell. I went to the "walk-in" last night.....doc gave me 10mg Prednisone tablets (corticosteroid). I'm supposed to take 5 the first day, 5 the second day, 4 the third day, 3 the 4th until I'm down to 1. ?????....
Prednisone = is a corticosteroid hormone. It decreases your immune system's response to various diseases to reduce symptoms such as swelling and allergic-type reactions.
Is this supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing? ...lol...
He also prescribed Hydroxyzine, supposed to help the itch...honestly the ITCH doesn't need any help, it's doing just fine all by itself. ...and lastly, Cephalexin...this stuff is supposed to bring down the infected swelling that's taken place around the open sores. Doesn't this all sound lovely...
I'm going to finish the steroid and infection pills.......heck maybe I'll gain some muscle mass in the process ... ...but I'm not taking the itch pills...too much medication makes me dopey and I'm dopey enough as it is.
Thanks for the feed back fellas. I must have gotten some on my belt too because it's starting to show up around the waistline........YYYYYAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOO BABY!!!!

Prednisone dose pack!! If ya got the ivy bad and need fast relief. You start off take a series of pills from 7 down to one (something like that - forget exact #) each day and by the 3rd day is almost gone and healing. By day 3 you will feel MUCH better.
I've had to resort to the dose packs 3 times in my life so far. I get some spots, but nothing major in a while.
I haven't tried the technu yet - will next time I get it.
You can get PI in the winter as well - roots to the stuff are even worse!

Old Fix
Used to be alergic to poison ivy. I could walk by a bush and get it.
Grandmother tried calamine lotion and I just looked like a pink spotted nerd walking around.
Old guy said, take a wash cloth and rub the spot until the good feeling goe away and the skin is open. Then splash on rubbing alcohol. Stings like a mutha but its gone next day.
Worked for me.
