Trim Tabs

[angler management]

Question about the switch's:

My boat is wired as the left switch operates the right trim tab
and right switch operates the left tab

I was told by 1 mechanic it was wired wrong, and one that is how it should be.

I know push the right switch down and the left tab goes down pushing the right side of the boat down.
So you push the switch as you want the boat to move, and the backward wireing does the thinking for you.

Is this how they are wired? or is it backwards?

I'm confused?

IMHO the wiring is correct. It is the same on my boat. Right switch makes right bow go down when pressed which makes tab on left side of boat go down (which makes right bow go down).

lol I went thru this at one time....left switch makes left tab actuate and right bow goes down.....right switch makes right tab actuate and left bow goes down...

I found that was the easiest way to keep it all correct

I love my tabs, wouldn't think of not having them onboard...

I found that using them a lot was the best way to understand the mechanics of them. I am not really sure what the joystick diagram indicates anymore, but i know how to make 'em move!

dug this from my bennett manual:

Trim tabs operate in reverse of what you might think. The port tab lifs the port stern which lowres the stbd. bow. Conversly, the stbd. trim tab lifts the stbd. stern which lowers the port bow. With properly installed trim tabs you will not be aware of this reverse function as the control function is based on the direction you wish to move the bow.

right switch top - right bow down - port tab goes down pushes port stern up and stbd. bow down.

same for left - upper position for port bow down command - stbd. tab actuates.

just the reverse for the two lower positions.

when i first used my tabs, i had to keep looking at the switch as a reminder. You notice the top position says "bow down", which moves the tabs down to push the "bow down".
So what you think would be up is actually down
What you think is down is actually up.
Right is left.
Left is right.

confused yet ?

like Hooper says, use them and get to understand the mechanics of them, it will become second nature.

As others have pointed out, yours are wired correctly. The logic is results oriented, just like your steering wheel. Turn left and the boat goes left, though the motor points right.

Good point on the stering Roger,, never thought of that even seeing it.

I love trim tabs, one broke, and I have been waiting for it to be fixed.

My wife is getting tired of me saying no no sit over there,, move over here!

Reminds me of Will Smith in the movie "Independence Day", when he tries to fly the alien spaceship for the 1ft time and goes backwards, so he flips the hand-drawn diagram for the controls upside down and flies off ok.

I have been hearing a lot about these Automatic Trim Tabs. They are put out by Nauticus Smart Tabs. No Hydraulics, No Wires, and
No Switches. They are Nitrogen Gas Actuators. Any of you guy's
have any experance with then? Any information would be kindlyaccepted. I was planning to use the on a 21' w/a. I don't have any trim tabs on my boat.
