DMF doing their job down at the ditch.

They've been busting people for short fish.

Nabbed 4 guys the other night (apparently vietnamese) for taking undersized stripers.
Took their gear, took their vehicle (had shorts innit), took everything and sent them on their way with a hefty fine.

Apparently 4 other busts this past week in the area too.

An interesting note last night, a bunch of kids were down at the ditch fishing, gave me some macs... Said they were thinking about taking shorts but I told em that the DMF is on the loose, and you risk losing your gear and your vehicle over it. They heeded the warning and thanked me for the info. Hopefully this will be a bunch of guys who've learned.

What is the procedure on what penalty an officer can give? Example just a fine, take tackle also etc. Reason I ask a friend of mine works at the ACI and he says sometimes officers bring in fisherman for taking shorts.

DMF/DEM has MORE power than a police officer.

If they catch you in your car with shorts, its considered transporting and its fully under their power to take your car away from you ON THE SPOT because it was used in a crime.

I'm pretty sure if you're walking to the parking lot then obviously its intent and the same situation.

They now (well always have but...) have unmarked/NOT GREEN trucks.
Two I saw last night were white full sized pickups with the police spotlight mounted infront of the windshield (no it wasn't the park ranger... i saw his vehicle earlier) and had HID headlights.

They also have night vision gear, boats, etc.

Apparently they're finally spending the funds how they should be.
To stop illegal fishing.

That is great news.

Another interesting point in the contrast of police vs DMF, in Vermont and NH, DMF do not need a warrant to seach a vehicle. They do not even need probably cause. Not sure about MA or RI.

I think it is great - throw the friggin book at anyone caught taking shorts.

No one wants to keep a striper more than me right now, and I toss back every fish under 28. And since I haven't caught one larger than 28, that means they all go back.

chat with you guys later

Good to hear. Maybe the word will get around. Some of those guys pull the 'No English' thing but when a guy with a gun starts threating to throw you in jail my guess is the english starts flowing.

Heres a point for discussion:
With a 2 fish limit - is it worse for the population to remove 2 babies or two breeders?

discuss.

There is a fine line that seperates a fisherman from a fool standing in water swinging a stick.

Well the only problem is I know one or two of them. They are customers of my dad and give him an awful lot of business. A part of me would just feel really guilty about it.

Don't count on it.

On occasion while I've been fishing I've encountered people taking shorts and I've said something when its just one person.
When its a group I don't say anything...I really don't want to get my a$$ kicked over a fish. Results from using the cell to call DEM have been absolutely negative everytime. They just don't show.I called the local cops and was referred to DEM.

RI DEM needs to be a little more aggressive when it comes to enforcement.

Wouldn't mind a saltwater license if this is what the funds will be used for.

BTW: Don't get hysterical bashing the "no english" people for this type of crap. A well know Long Island B&T has been busted for supplying a restaurant with (many) shorts and out-of-season fish. All parties involved are 100%, red-blooded, white Americans. As are most of the idiots I see trashing the beaches and jetties I fish on, kicking fish back in the water, driving on the dunes, etc..To think that Americans aren't doing more harm than the immigrants is foolish.
