Spinning rod/reel balance

Purplenoon's post about taping on a reel so you can position it made me think about rod/reel balance. I know this is pure personal preference, but I'm wondering if there are any real guidelines people putting together a new spinning rod/reel.

I just bought a 1204 spinner and I would think it would take a 6500SS size reel to be balanced at the spool. This seems like a large reel for a light rod.

At what point does overall weight of the combo outweigh the fatigue impact of a rig that's tip heavy?
