Hey ,I don't use conventional reels (yet) , but I saw something in OTW this month that may be of help. There is an article on tournament distance casting and the guy has a piece of latex tubing attached to the back of the reel for a thumb guard.Check out the picture in the article ..perhaps you could use it."

I didn't want to steer that other thread astray but the above quote reminded me of years ago when "most heavy duty Casters" had leather thumb savers on the reels.

The leather thumb savers went back to the earliest reels, before star drags were developed, perhaps some of the Reel Old Timers could/would comment!!
