Seascape Motel Disappears in Massive Sewer Gas Explosion
North Truro, MA – A huge explosion rocked this small Cape Cod town at 2:35 AM this morning when the Seacape Motor Inn on Knolls Heights road was destroyed. Owner, Chuck Nyhan, was the only one in the structure as the motel had closed for the season. Nyhan was found shaken but unharmed after being thrown into the bushes across the street. Local fire marshal, Randy Kane, stated that “It has all the hallmarks of a sewer gas explosion”. “Methane gas.” he said. Motel guests had reported hearing strange rumblings and gurgling in the drain pipes for years. A large contingent of hang glider pilots had filled up the motel during the last week and may have contributed to the increased production of sewer gas. Police logs show two calls in the past month for false fire alarms, the most recent one occurring on last Friday night at 2am.
Kane speculates that a spark in defective alarm wiring may have triggered the blast but cautions that a full investigation in conjunction with the State fire marshals office is forthcoming. Neighbor’s windows were blown out as far as 1000 feet down the road. Luckily most homes in the area were unoccupied and there were no guests in residence. Innkeeper Nyhan was treated and released at the Provincetown’s Our Lady of Perpetual Motion hospital for minor cuts and bruises. He was not available for comment. The motel was built over 60 years ago and had a septic system according to town engineering records.
