Post salary?

hello,
im new to a salary type situation and am not sure what i can ask/shoot for. i got an unbelievable offer for full time work but i dont want to sell myself short. im a carpenter who has been offered a full time job well above the $70,000.00 per year bracket and i have already told the interested that bennys far outweigh the take home. i got all the friend work i need and it wont stop. mr. hiring does not care ,he just really wants my partner and I (NO NOT THAT KIND) to oversee his building operations. i have got this feeling this buisness is gonna take off. he has been around a while ,has done very well and has ALWAYS paid me on time.
so my ? to you is what does a guy look for, as far as bennys are concerned ,being paid salary?

tell him you ant 70 grand a year plus bennies... then negotiate from there. if he needs you that bad, he might just say ok.

but im like ?WHAT THE HECK ARE BENNYS? i know what they are but im thinking long term. % on 401 k that type of stuff. how many vacation days. im gonna be a daddy in about three weeks and this guy said 'mike dont worry about a thing, i've been there" your the type of guy im looking for
but anyhow he is a good fiend but lets face it im not walking away from peanuts either, but for the long run???

well you should worry about it becuase if you dont hammer something out and get it in writing things could get wierd. someone else has to help you out here because i am a starving self emplyed artist

Vacation, 401K, Profit Sharing or some sort of Bous program, Medical (it's hard to get good medical now a days unless you are a Guvament Worker)

Don't be fooled, some employers think working overtime to get your salary up is a bonus On call for midnight breakdowns? Try to stay away form fixed salary if possible, done it the better part of my life and the Company ALWAYS makes out...

Just as a starting point, my employer matches 90 percent of the first 6 percent that I put into my 401k. That is on the high end of what most employers match. Ask that you be fully vested in your 401 k right away,this way if it does'nt work out you can take the money he puts in with you right away. Most companies build you up to 100 percent over a number of years.

salary?

He is offering you salary because he knows that will save him money in the longrun. Try to work out a deal with a base 35k + bennies. Then structure so you can earn 150k+. Do this by having pre-set goals and if you hit them you will be rewarded. This way at least Jan. Feb. when it slows down you still have money comming in.

thats why they call it fishing not catching

If he's been that successful I'm sure he has other employees - that's where to start - you might be pleasantly surprised . . . or just say you'll take whatever he gets

As far as sallary is concerned, take what you made last year, double it, and tell him thats what you want. If his intial offer was already higher tan that nubmer, add 30% to his number for your first offer. Can't hurt.

As far as benefeits....

Vacation- How much do you need, how much do you want? I would say, if it is typical corporate, don't plan on getting more than 4 wks, but less than 2wks is unnacceptable.

401K- Companies usually have a set policy for this, but make sure you find out. 50% match on 15% of 70K an extra 5K in your fund.

Medical/Dental/Vision- Again, not usually negotiable, but a huge factor.

Bonus/Profit Sharing/Shares- Get it in writing. Make sure the goals are reasonable ...ask me how i know....

Car/Truck- Can't hurt to ask.

Tools- See if you can get them to buy you some tools.

Clothes/Boots- Can't hurt to ask. Tell them you want to present a professional image for the company

Laptop- If you need it

Don't just take what he offers. Life is all about negotiating. Tell him you really appreciate the offer, but you need more to make it worth your while. If you end up back at his orignal offer, at least you tried (and you probably need some negotiating lessons).

And don't laugh at all of those things I suggested throwing in. They are reasonable, and I have gotten every single one of them.

OH YEAH. GET EVERYTHING IN WRTING. PERIOD. I DON'T CARE IF HE IS YOUR BROTHER.
