He is aware Pete, more phone calls could only help! Patrick Paquette spoke quite eloquently about the issue at the meeting the other night. Patrick and MSBA are on it!

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

Your talking to a "DEAF EAR!!!" talking to Diodotti!!!
He knows what is going on out there and not doing anything about it!!! He knows that they are throwing over thousands of pounds of fish per day when you take the dozen boats that go!!! Also they up grade, the small legal fish are discarded 1st!!! And you will never stop that!!! Most of the gill netters are done fishing by 9-10am and the enviromentals in most cases aren't out there to after the fact!!! And remember that none these boats have observers on them!!!

Last year the green police did bag a couple boats but didn't make an exsample out of them!!! The state should fine them heavy and take a boat or two then you will see a differance!!!!

Close the cod fishing down for everybody "commercial and recreational for 3-5 years and the fishery will be a bonanza like the striper fishery!!! A"PLUS!!PLUS!!PLUS!!!" for everybody!!!

Pete, ask Austin about the discard!!!

Happy Holidays!!!

Fly Rod...you can't sit around and do nothing. You have to speak for your voice to be heard, and if you have to yell then you yell! They will come around sooner or later.....sooner would be better, later would be better than never!

Bigfish, The commercial jiggers have been complaining to the above named and others in the state for a few years and nothing has been done!!! Last winter they did close a section of the western shore to gillnetting and only letting the commercial jiggers in that area!!! You can't denie one commercial group and allow another!!! The only reason the draggers aren't there is because they may do a lot of damage to there nets or they would be there too!!

Happy Holidays!!!

I've talked with patrick a few times about this area also,
But like he told me,
Yelling can only do so much,
But if you're out there, have a camera to take pics, as a picture of a violation would go a lot further than a bunch of guys yelling over the phone!!!

It is not illegal, it is not a violation, for a gillnetter to discard 5lbs.; 10lbs.; 100lbs.; 1000lbs. etc over his allowable quota !!! It is considered overage [discard] it is not illegal for another boat to come behind a boat discarding overage and picking them out of the water by hand, gaff or a fish dip net!!!

It is illegal for a commercial boat to pass it's cod dicard, by-catch or overage to another commercial boat!!! And if you can get a picture of that, plus the two boats big black & white numbers in that picture then you may be going in the right direction!!!!

If the state really wanted to curtail this passing of fish they would have an under cover boat out there and they do not need a camera!!!!

Happy Holidays!!!!

Recreational Limits

Recreational Limits have also been changed in the area from Boston Light, North to Marblehead Neck, east to the territorial sea. From the way I understand the notice, there is now a 300 LB limit per recreational vessel no matter how many anglers are on board. This means that the 17 ft whaler with one angler to the 100' party boat with 50 anglers have the same limit. I am not sure this is a great thing but better than nothing.

This same area was under emergency clouser last year from the 1st of the year for gillnetters!!!!

Relentless, are you sure that there is a max.of 300 lbs. per recreational vessel even if there is only one person??? The reason that I question that is, in effect now recreational fisher men are only allowed 5 fish per person from Dec.1-- feb.28th!!!
i'm going to go and check itout on the fisheries page!!!

Happy Holidays!!!

regardless of what the recreational limit is the bottom line is that these big old cow cod or whats left of them will get to regenerate themselves Lets hope that they all didn't get strained out of the sea and a new batch of old mamas got a shot at leaving us some of their gene pool for the future

I just finished scanning all over the Mass.DMF!!! unless i missed it the only gill net clouser was the one last year from Dec.16,2003-March31,2004 from the 42-30 to 42-24 out to the 70-45 line!!!

I'll take back my" excellent" comment about Diodotti!!!!

You can give that credit to to the "commercial jiggers" because they were the ones that fought to get that clouser in 2003 and now it may be carried over to this year which will more then likely be a yearly thing!!!!

Happy Holidays!!!!

Relentless> Thanks for the info!!!

Pete> This clousure is nothing new!!! It has been hashed around on the waterfront fora couple of months and talked about in the coffee shop!!!! It is a little late since the gillnetters already "RAPED!!!" the area!!!!!

Yup !!! your right!!! credit does go to others also, like the longliners!!!! It all boils down to which side of the fence your on ,
gillnetters want it open!! hookers want the gillnetters out!!!! recs want it for themselves!!!

Has nothing to do with Christmas!!! Sorry, I forgot, it may have something to do with it, Diodotte did declare himself GOD!!!" at one meeting[B

It's time to go cook the octupus!!!

Have a " MERRY XMAS!!!" to you and all of the people here at "striped-Bass!!!"
