Milford man is still missing at beach
CHATHAM - Searchers this morning are still looking for the body of a Milford man who disappeared from North Beach yesterday after his car became stuck in the soft sand at the southernmost tip of the barrier beach, just across from the town pier and Aunt Lydia's cove.
Jeffrey P. Kaup, 34, was the man whose car was discovered, hazard lights flashing, at the water line of North Beach early Sunday, according to Chatham Police Lt. Michael Walker. A 911 caller about 2 a.m. notified police about cries for help at the beach.
Kaup's father, Edward, said his son worked as a director of quality at the Philadelphia First Bank offices in Westboro. Recently engaged, his son was staying with friends at the family camp on the barrier beach which stretches from Orleans into Chatham. Kaup said his son loved to ride out to the point and have a cigarette before leaving for home.

After his car got stuck, Kaup started to walk back to the camp, his father said. The night was pitch-black and windy. His son apparently walked onto a sandbar and ended up in the water.

During yesterday's 15-hour search by air, land and sea, the public beach and its oversand trails were closed into the early afternoon. The search stopped at 5 p.m. when the U.S. Coast Guard officials said any victim could not have survived in the cold water. Today the search for a body resumed with patrols on shore and along shore by the harbormaster and the North Beach patrols. "I don't think anybody holds out hope that he's still alive. We hold out the hope they'll find him and bring his body home," Edward Kaup said, adding that the police, fire and Coast Guard personnel have done a great job. "They've been wonderful. Nothing's worse than losing a child."
