Lami GSB 1201L or 1201M

Hello Everyone,

I have been lurking on this site since the fall and find the knowledge (and characters) here incredible. Anyway, I am planning to build my first rod this spring and am trying to decide between the 1201L and 1201M as a spinner. I fish So. Co. (typically not the breachways) and Narragansett regulary, take an annual trip to the Cape beaches and for the first time plan a trip to one of the islands in June. I fish eels and plugs - from bombers to tins. This past season I fished a factory Lamiglas XS 91 MHS rod and want to add a 10 footer to the arsenal and am trying to decide between the two lamiglas options. I know that many of you have fished both of the these blanks and any feedback would be appreciated.

The answer is simple...Both

If this is in addition to the XS 91 MHS I'd build the M. It's will give you the balls for the bigger spots and you can still use the factory rod for the smaller stuff.

For the normal fishing you describe , I would go with the 120 1L. If you were doing the breachways , rivers etc , the 120 1M. the 120 1L is extremely versatile. Its not delicate like you would expect from a rod labeled "L"

Of all the places you listed, and assuming the Canal isn't on the Cape agenda, the only place you'd be undergunned with the 1L is if you fish Squibnocket on the Vineyard.

If custom isn't important to ya---you could probably save a few bucks by getting the Lami XS 101 MS factory rod--it's built on the 120 1L blank

the 1201L is a nice blank w/ a top end of 3oz, and a sweet spot between 1.5 and 2.5. since both blanks are more parabolic than the xra series, they are perfect for eels. the 120m is better for stuff between 2 and 4 oz with a sweet spot of 2.5-3oz.

neither blank are suggested for south county inlets. for those breachways, you want a rod between 9-9.5' with plenty of backbone. distance is rarely a factor as you rarely need to cast far. durability is. think glass or composite. 1213m stock or cut is your rod for a jetty.

I would go with the M over the L hands down for that area. I fish the same parts of RI as you with plugs and eels. There were times last season when my 1201M wasn't even powerful enough for the fish we ran across. My fishing partner and I were both using 1201M's with 7000 Abus and 30# mono, and we both commented on several nights that the rod just didn't have enough backbone to stop some of the fish we found.

My partner was throwing his L one night, and lost 3 straight fish that wrapped him around lobster pots. The L did not have the power to turn those fish.

Get the M for sure, you'll need the balls it has over the L.
The M is much more versital.

The Allstar 1088 makes a nice breacway rod. Its lclose to what the Sabre 1089's used to be.

not at there stock length. not enough power and too soft of a tip. for breachways, go glass - sb1213m cut.

Where would you cut it? The butt I suppose. I don't think I'd want the tip cut any on that stick, just curious....
