Fluro for bottem fish. - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

Good fluro carbon ain't cheap and I ain't rich. Is it worth it useing fluro for other bottem fish? Example... Togs, they can nibble but I've never known them to be leader shy. As a kid togs where one of the fish we spent alot of time fishing for. The hooks we used had mono leaders, they did fine. At the local tackle shop there where always togs rigs made up with rope like material (old timers rig) I finaly bought one and never have I used mono again. Catch more, hug up less, more doubles & less tangles.

What about seabass.... I never know them to be leader shy. Scup...nope. Fluke...although I'm not a fluke head I'd say yes.

Did you notice a significant difference when you changed over to fluro for bottem fish....or does it just make you feel better.

Never bothered with blackfish, seen rigs tied directly to braided line fish as well as mono.. I use 50lb mono straight off the reel, two big ole hooks and a sinker... never felt like I was missing out....

as far as fluke... I dunno, I pretty much stick to black, blue and bass....

I definitely notice a big difference, especially if you're on a headboat (competitive fishing situation).

That's been my experience here in the Northeast and elsewhere. Tog, fluke, sea bass, scup, conger eels, pout, cod, haddock, cusk, you name it, fluoro makes a difference.

I use it all the time - call it a confidence thing but I think it makes a diference.

It's always seemed to me that rigs tied with flourocarbon seem to last longer due to the abrasion resistance.

I think you guys have good points, Glos, if its a confidence thing I think confidence is one of the biggest components to being good at what you do...
WW, maybe you're just better than the rest of the crowd on the headboat...

TC, when I'm blackfishing I go through enough rigs that I just cut back and re-tie every few fish, on a good tog day (C&R maybe 40-50) that would be ALOT of Floro, and outside my budget... (cheap SOB) BTW, congrats on the awards at the RISAA night

My grandfather fished blackfish on 80lb pink mono on a broomstick rod, I have never felt blackfish are leadershy... having the right bait (read BIG) is to me much more important

tight lines... 73 days and counting till the big basses show up

I was talking about fluke rigs more or less. I've found that when fluke fishing a rig tied with 25# Seaguar tends take the abuse of fluke choppers a little better than mono. And thanks re: the awards, I saw you got a nice tog as always

I started wit the floro for tog this yr.got my first over 10 lbs.I agree my #'s went up with tog this yr when i went to floro.An for fluke its a no brainer.I go on my buds party boat an u look around at the guys doin well most wit floro.Oldtimers, took some schoolin to change but they have.

It wasn't three years ago that most fisherman I spoke with((guru's of fresh and salt)) when asked if they noticed a difference when useing flouro for bass... they said NO. I think we can all agree bass are leader shy but if a fish isn't leader shy the leader does not matter. I know commerial togers that do pretty darn well with out flouro. Portugues handlining scup/seabass made a living,, NO flouro. I spent many hours fishing next to them in buzz bay and watching them catch many totes fish. IMO fisherman today want fast results. I agree with you guys enough can't be said about confidence, I'm very confident that rope is very good for togs.....you never have to worry about abrasion either

The term 'don't knock it till you try it' also applies to old school rigs & methods.

I fished for many yrs usin 20 lb ande on most everything.well times have changed an so have I.I always caught fish but know i think I catch more fish.I am more schooled now but to say the tecnology is not better an has not enabled me to do better I think would be a lie.i could go back an use the mono an mason line but i would be lacking in confidence.this yr i went to braid an floro for tog. AS I been at it with the bass for a while now.I know my landings went way up.If I get one fish per day because of the floro I think it was worth it.its all i use anymore.I think U should use what u feel comfortable with.My knots are good because I am comfortable.thats half the battle.

The way I figure it, if you are fishing for fish, floro probably doesn't matter much. But if you are fishing for one fish, I'd use it. You never know if the big one has snubbed your bait.
