How's the lobstering this year?

I think I am going to drop a few pots in the water this year, was wondering how everyone is doing. I know it has been pretty poor for the comm guys but I want to do give it a try (rec lic). Its been a long while since I pulled a lobster pot up but I want to show my kids what it is all about and maybe get a couple sweet meals out of it.

Any of you guys have any pots out ?

I'm a recreational lobster guy. I have 20 traps with a friend of mine. We share in pulling them. We also bait them and check them every few days. Last year was pretty good. I think we put our traps in around June 15th and took them out at the end of Nov. I think we gathered about 450 lobsters over that period. It was great! We did not sell any of them but we did have some great party's and made alot of new friends.
I put mine in about three weeks ago. I have not got a whole lot yet. It is pretty early for Lobsters based on their migration patterns. I think the real season starts late June early July. Go to the library and get "The Secret life of Lobsters" It is a great read and very informative. Let me know if you have any particular questions and I'm sure I can help you out...It is well worth it to have a freezer full of Lobster in the middle of winter!

Bonefish,

thanks, I will get the book this afternoon. I love reading about this kind of stuff.

450...that is pretty damn good! Are you in MA? Most of the guys I spoke with are not doing that well. 2 keepers per week on 6 pot type of thing. Actually that is all I really need anyway. I am doing it as half food and half education for me and my kids. Given what I spent on gear so far....I doubt it will be worth it (in terms of $) but it should be an interesting thing to do and I have plenty of available lobster bait that I would rather see in a pot then in the dumpster.

Having a bunch of tails in the freezer must be extra sweet come February eh?
