Holdover Striper plans
Anoyne other than me or GS plan to chase some holdovers this winter? I know he's got the Thames figured out and personally, I plan to fish the "Toilet" from shore a few days or nights in the near future...
What other holdover spots are there that we can work on for a winter fix???

Talked to steve this Am. He gave me this tidbit during the chat.Davep(who I swear lives in the toilet from december till march) is well on his way to numerous little scrappy bass,They are there in decent numbers and the fishing is better on the power plant side in the late afternoon right into the night.Good luck! BTW, bring with you , rubber gloves, hydrogen peroxide and Iodine solution to kill the fecal choloform bacteria that will no doubt be on your rod, reel, line and hands when fishing there. And wash your hands before eating!! Resporators are not mandatory but may help ease the glorious smell coming from that "toilet"

Yeah, I want to fish there.....NOT. Not exactly a report the local tourist bureau might want to use LOL. I'll drive on by RI and opt for CT on winter hold overs.

Sorry "gotman" But the upper reaches of the thames are just as nasty.I used to fish the place all the time.In fact most bass there look worse than ones in the toilet. Some strange looking "ick" on those thames stripers. I have not fished there in about 6 years so it is possible that it has cleaned up a bit, I just dont know. I used to get some real brutes up there on live herring in late march.

Having fished in both places, I'd say the water is about as nasty and both have a certain level of, uhh, runoff to deal with . The "Toilet" is right next to where the water can get flushed out and is closer to cleaner water than the Thames. If the sewage overflow is running for a few days after heavy rains, Prov is the dirtier. If it hasn't been running and the only discharge is the clean exhaust water from the power plant, it's probably cleaner than the Thames.
I'd also say that the fish in both places can look downright nasty although there was a stong find of "Clean & Bright" fish last Feb & March in Providence.
Neither place is a recruiting poster for the Sierra Club...

Well if you want "cleaner" fish you can try Scortons Creek. I have not heard anything about holdovers there this year but there always a few in there as well as some very large brown trout that don't seem to hit anything. I'm waiting for ice!

Well, I don't think I'd ever call the Thames clean LOL. Still I feel like my chances for both numbers and quality are better there. I saw another 30 lb fish pulled ashore the last time down and one maybe in the mid teens. Still I wouldn't bring home diner from either place.

I would love to try the Thames sometime this winter or early spring. I don't know about the peroxide thingy.

have gotten some second hand reports of holdovers around Salem power plant up here on the north shore, but can't be reached from shore. (Funny how quickly the security rats chase me out)
JR, please count me in on the plug drawing.
And I resolve to be a more contributing member in 2002. (might even get to show up to an event or two...

There was a small article in the current On The Water, but the problem with that article and fishing in the recommended spots, is they are all tied to power plants. I'm not sure your going to be getting too close to many warm water discharges these days.
