targeting keeper seabass
With fathers day coming up, nothing would make my pops happier then to catch some tasty table fare.
My experience with seabass has been when scup fishing. I have noticed alot more seabass around then ever, the thing is their mostly shorts. Most of the humps I'm on a inshore and in farely shallow waters.
At what depts hold a higher keeper ratio... I know alot nice seabass are caught fluking,,,would it be a smarter move to target fluke instead of seabass this time of year??
any help would be great/

I cooked up two nice sea bass this weekend on the grill...They were simply delicious. 16 bucks at a local market down the street
Considering how much I spend on gear I don't need, it's a bargoon
Sorry I'm no help, unless you want the recipe.

Where are you located? I hear there is super sea bass fishing right now in Buzzards bay. Like most fish they school by size and the bigger fish tend to hold in deeper water.

Tony;
What mike said;
go to deeper water, 50-70ft outside the bay (Narragansett) can be killer, go with squid, but a few greenies may get you one of our favorite late fall (and early spring) fish too...
Right on the edges of said rock pile has produced nice fluke over the years as well...
Check your PM's I have a hunch on another spot....

seabass
Tony go deep! One way I have caught the bigger ones is by jigging with small diamond jigs, you can tip these with squid too. Its like a mini version of cod fishing.

I had an outgoing tide with incoming winds,fish right over by the rock pile in the old canal channel, as you come up the ledge get ready!!! Good luck,this is one of my favorite spots!

We had a excellent day, yup buzz bay is hot. Got into some scup early on, a couple went over 2#, haven't caught scup that big in a while. There where a few seabass mixed in but nothing big. After getting our limit we hit some deeper water and increased weight to stay on the bottem while drifting. We got some real qaulity fish.. big ol knots on their heads like brackish water frontosa. Next time bigger hooks. I kicking myself for not bringin my digital With the scup, seabass, fluke and one striped one my pops was happier then a pig in chit. Thanks S-b'ers

Sea bass for us has always been a REAL nice by-catch while we were fluking. I have only targeted them a couple times. We seem to catch enough while fluking to satisfy our needs. The big humped ones have seemed to come (for us anyway) in the deeper spots we fish. There is a few deep spots about a mile of the eliz' islands that seems to have them. My son got this 4.2#er at Lucus on Sat in about 70 feet of water. He though he had a dogfish it fought so hard.
I saw a 5.7#er caught. This photo (4.2) does not do the fish justice. The head is almost solid turquoise...it is a beautiful fish.
More difficult to clean then most fish but worth the effort...mighty good eating.
Did you know that sea-bass are hermaphrodites (sp)...they start off life as a female and change to a male later in life....figures they like to live in MA

If you get into a bunch of biscuts (we get em toggin in the fall) I have three words for ya;
Electric Carving Knife....
We do blackfish with em, under 2 min a fish when you get a rhythm going
