Bass followed by three of its own??

Last week had a good morning on Bass to 15 to 20 lbs on some homemade poppers. on the backside of Elizabeth Islands. We left at around 0830 to try for fluke and sea bass in sound. After a slow pick of a few fish we called it a day at around 1130. The fog was still real thick, so we tried a few more cats into the stones to see what was there. On the second cast I got a chunky 25" bass folllowed by three over 40 that followed right to boat side, water was gin clear and about 7 to 10 feet. So what where these three doing, hoping the little guy droped lure, or looking for a large meal of 25" bass. any thoughts, FLAP.
