What are you paying for eels?

They seem to be going up each week, just like fuel.

$1.75 in cc bay, $1.50 in SOCO

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

I paid 1.50 this time in Maine, it went up a quarter. They said that their dealer said he could sell all his eels to a bait dealer from Mass who would pick them up from him for 30% more than he was selling them delivered. I think I'm gonna have to rig the ones in my freezer for next time.

My supplier was out of eels Sat. night. Thats in Old Saybrook Ct. I thought he was joking when I walked in sat nite . To hear no bait took me by surprise. I guess it could be a permanent problem. Right now he said he would have more by Monday. " Save the dead ones"

I paid $1.25 at the bait shop just east of the Sagamore bridge...forget the name.

Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

Lots of the tackle shops I talk to every Sunday wanted to talk about eels last Sunday. Seems that the Canadian goverment has put limits on the amount and size of eels that can be exported. No eels smaller then 14 inches and fewer of them, so the prices are going up. Once the ASMFC acts on eels you can expect the prices to go even higher. Its a supply and demand thing. The supply is shrinking but the demand isn't. The days of the $1.50 eel are numbered.

That OTW sluggo article was very timely I thought. I rigged up a few and gave them a test cast...pretty decent I thought. I will give them a try next outting. I was surprised to hear how you fish them but I will give it a go.
I was wondering how they stand up compared to a live eel and how many should one take to the beach for a nights fishing?

Steve and I fish together every night, He always brings a dozen sluggos with him, bluefish wreck havoc on them. Also they are good for a few fish and then you need to change, the bait gets tore up good especially on teen size fish. When the sluggo is no good to use anymore, he takes out the hooks and weights and saves them.

Are they as good as eels? sometimes, From fishing side by side with him and me using eels, It is just about even in the numbers department however, I give the edge ( overall) for bigger fish to the live eel.

To work the sluggo right you have to reel in at a good clip while twitching the rod tip, I have noticed that sometimes the bass prefer the slower eel but, they are the next best thing to a live eel and I like them.

The reason I dont fish them more is that I use conventional gear and cant get the speed I need. One of these days I will buy a "sluggo setup" of about an 8 foot rod and spinning reel.
