What in the world are we doing wrong????
Hi Guys, it has been quite a while since I have posted about anything because I am just not having any sucess. So I am hopeing that some of you veterans can please help me out. I live in Revere Ma. and fish out of East Boston (thats where the boat is docked). We have tried everything from trolling tubes, lures spinners with worms, Live eels and so on.... We try drifting, anchoring, trolling you name it i think we have tried it. Now I do ok catching schoolies but we have never caught any stripers of size. I always hear about boat fisherman having great sucess. So what are we doing wrong? How do all these charter boats GAURANTEE A KEEPER OR THE TRIP IS FREE???? We have been fishing all year and have "0" keepers from the boat. Just to give you an idea of the areas that we fish we start out around deer island, in the rip, and all the way to egg rock off Nahant. Now please I am begging all of you for the missing info that we are so desprately looking for! If there is some secret info that you dont want to post but would still like to help a felow fisherman out you could send it to me in a P.M. and I will keep what is shared with me to myself. Or you can send me an instant message on AIM if you need to know anymore specific things that we are doing. Please I am pleading with all of you HELP US OUT PLEASE?
Thank You!

no luck
i'm no veteran, and no boat fisherman. but i know that in the summer months there are very few stripers to be caught on the north shore when the sun is out. my best bet for summertime catch is most always in the dark.

if you have a fish finder, motor around till you find a nice tidal rip and look for holes or divits on teh bottom ( boulders, depressions) that are holding fish. anchor up tide and chum for a while, then drift back an unweighted chunk. leadcore works swell too.
if you dont catch anything, i suggest golf

back to your woes, LuaP,
1- Do you have a fish finder? Are there fish where you are fishing? If not, move!
2- You need spots. I can't help you there, cause I fish in RI, but follow around some of the charters/sharpies, keep your distance, don't harass them, but keep your eye on them. They know the spots. Try their spots when they aren't there. Hopefully some nice s-b guys will PM you some hot boston spots.
3- Fish close to structure. A lot of my fish come very close to rocks, pilings, bridges, Sand spits, bars, reefs. Fish structure. If you are not gritting your teeth you are not close enough to the structure. Refer back to number 1. Are there fish around this structure?
4- Eben's advice is good.
5-Jig parchutes with pork rind strips.
6- You have to troll real slow. Many boats can't go as slow as you have to go, and sometimes have to drag a sea anchor or a bucket or something. Like 3 kts or less.
7- You must put the lure/bait in the fish's face. Big fish will not swim to your lure/bait 10 ft above there heads unless they are really actively feeding, and if they are actively feeding, turn of your engine and drift and throw them plugs. So, when trolling or jigging, you should be near or on the bottom. drift eels through the rip, but if fishing structure, put eel on a 3 way and send him down to where the fish are (see #1).
WIth a boat you don't have to fish at night, although it doesn't hurt, it is not necessary. The fish are not nocturnal, they just don't like warm shallow bright water. They are feeding durring the day in the darker, deeper, cooler waters, although as the fall grows closer, this becomes less true.
I'm no expert, but I have caught several decent fish this summer following the advice I just gave you.
Hope that helps.
Zac

Lua - WHERE are you fishing?
I had a local Boston captain recently tell me that most charters up there that are saying they are slamming the fish are full of, uhh, Agressive Marketing.
Head north to cooler, deeper, rockier water, then cross your fingers...

Oh, one other thing, it can't hurt to take a charter or two and see how they do it and then copy that.
