Paint Prep Question - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

Well I finally might paint some plugs in the near future

and was wondering if you wire your plugs, grommet, weights, etc, before you paint or do you wire them after paint. If you do wait till after paint to do all the hardware how do you keep from putting your fingerprints all over them and thus run into the problem of having dirty plugs before the epoxy. I know some do hardware after epoxy but I want to do hardware before and then epoxy. I have read about problems with fingerprints and adhesion of the epoxy. Is there something you use to wipe the plugs down with before you put the epoxy on? I am a fish out of water on this subject. Thanks Paul

I've been doing :

Sealer
Primer
Paint
Spray with a clear Coat
Do the Hardware
Scuff Clear coat
Wipe down with Isopropyl
Epoxy

In that order and it seems to work for me.

I do it the same with the exception of wiping down with denatured alchohol.

I do all the steps Df does, but I don't clear coat - sand & wipe. If you work clean you don't get the plugs all doity! I have had trouble with the e-tex after using a clear coat. The e-tex sort of formed all kinds of cracks and wrinkles after swimmin in the salt wata. It seems as though the clear coat and the epoxy don't jive too well. I don't feel that fingerprints or handling the plug effects the e-tex when applied and the plug is spun on a wheel.

If any of you's wire after the epoxy don't you worry about cracking the epoxy when you tighten up on the wire and squeeze from either end or does the epoxy flex enough to not be a problem? P.

P., the pressure of the wire will be on the lip and tail grommet.
