VS Reel Oil Viscosity..

was out recently with a vs in the cold about 40 degrees, reel was tough to turn. anyone change over to a lower viscosity oil in the fall, and what do you use? it's one of the newer ones. thanks, don.

Might have to call the factory on that one. I know they used to use 90wt Castrol (the same stuff you'd put in the rear differential of most trucks) but some of the most recent reels seem to have something red colored in them. Not sure what it is...

Maybe a synthetic 90wt is worth a try, they don't thicken as much in the cold. Modern synthetics shouldn't effect your seals either, but I'd still call VS first.

Sending mine out tomorrow.Purchased it in March. I lost a good quantity of red fluid out of the housing. Some came out the handle, some out of the spool shaft. Also very tight in the colder weather. Back to the 560 for now.

oh i can crank it, just like it to be a little easier for my needle fishing. i change oil vis. in my vehicles in summer and winter so why not my reels. i'm looking for my equip. to perform at its max potential. i promise i'd have NO problem if a 50 was on the end.
