My advice would be to decide what types of flies you want to tye first. Then you can get just what you need in a couple basic colors. White and yellow are good to start with. Most kits contain alot of crap you don't need. Buy the best vise you can afford, you won't regret it later. I strongly suggest a good book. My personal favorite is "A Perfect Fish" by Ken Abrames. His designs and Philosophy are not mainstream But IMHO they outfish any other method for fishing in current and current is where the stripers are. Shoot me a pm if you want more info, I would be glad to help.

Attend tying meetings at UFT. With the beginners programs you don't even need to have your own tools or materials. It's a good place to start -wish they were around when I was young.

Shrimp
These Might not look like shrimp to us, but the fish certainly think they are. They look amazingly alive in the water, They are steelhead flies and look even better when tied with spey hackle. One of my most productive flies this year.
