Poachers bagged

I saw this interesting tidbit while back home for Thanksgiving. Glad they got'm.

Alleged poachers summoned to court
By GEORGE W. CLAXTON, Recorder Staff
MONTAGUE — Two men who authorities say were poaching deer early Wednesday morning will be summoned to court on a variety of infractions by the Environmental Police.

Paul Keyes, 52, of Springfield and Todd Griswold of 14 Chestnut Hill Road, Leverett, will be charged with a variety of crimes including hunting in closed season, unlawful possession of a loaded rifle in a motor vehicle, hunting during hours of darkness, using a light for hunting and illegal possession of deer.

“They had two deer, an eight-point buck and a five-point buck,” said Environmental Police Capt. Bruce Bennett.

According to the captain, the two men were found near XXXXXXXXXX Road in XXXXXXXXX around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday in possession of the two carcasses.

“They had two guns, a 7mm rifle and a .223-caliber rifle,” he said.

According to Bennett, it is illegal to hunt deer with rifles in Massachusetts.

“There are some animals that you can hunt with rifles — coyotes, woodchucks, but not deer,” he said.

Authorities say that they first became aware of the alleged poachers when a XXXXXXXXXX resident called police complaining about the sound of gunfire near his home.

“The Montague Police contacted Environmental Police officer David Kinner, who investigated,” Bennett said.

According to Kinner, the alleged poachers were hunting from a vehicle and using a spotlight to stop the deer in their tracks.

“They had the deer they shot in the bed of one pickup truck and they were hunting from the other pickup,” he said.

The Environmental Police officer said that the pair were originally stopped by the Montague Police, who held them until he could arrive to begin his investigation.

“The Montague P.D. did a great job on this one,” he said.

According to the Montague Police, the complainant told officers that he had heard firing in the woods and saw a spotlight. The same man had called police on Friday with a similar complaint of illegal hunting near his house.

On Wednesday, the resident was able to provide police with a license plate number for the truck from which the men were hunting.

The two alleged poachers will be brought before the magistrate for a show cause hearing later this year.

Show Cause hearing

That stinks. It means they didn't get arrested, and the truck they were hunting from and the truck they had the deer in weren't confiscated as the law allows and would have happened everywhere else. Show cause hearing means that the EPO didn't know what he was doing or they are going to brush aside the case. Bet the guys who got caught know someone.
