when do you remove a plug from the bag
i have a tackle bag that is the size of a steamer trunk , i am trying to weed out some of the clutter , what are some of your thoughts on when a plug gets removed , is it if you didn't catch on it during the year or if you don't use it for a season . it always seems like you don't have the right plug on a certian day but i realy need to thin the heard

get more than one bag and rotate depending on where you fish and the conditions.

The only time I remove a plug from my bag is when I am tying it on my line!

Put 3 - 5 plugs in your bag and learn them well. Don't even think about any other plugs you own. Know exactly when and how to use them. Learn when not to throw each plug, not just when you should throw each one. As you learn this batch of plugs, you can add in one for each one you take out based on what you have already learned. One of the worst things I see new guys doing is going into the surf with a huge bag stuffed to the gills with plugs. I used to be very guilty of this myself. As my fishing knowledge has developed, I have learned to only pack the plugs which will work under the variables at hand. You'll do yourself far more good down the road by this techinque than you ever will by bringing every plug you own, "just in case". How many times has a certain plug gone along for night after night of romantic seaside walks without so much as getting wet? What good did that plug do you? I say start off with less plugs and only add in more as you see they are needed based on what you have learned form the other plugs you allready carry.

Right on T-lap. I carry about 9-12 plugs on me and about 20 more in the truck. Out of the plugs in my bag i mainly rotate bewteen 3 or 4. Keep it simple, whats the point of carrying a soid black danny and a solid black danny with scales.

I've gone to 2 bags, Heavy and Light , and a milk crate full of plugs so I can change between Day and Night. What I really need , I guess is about 8 bags.

Thats basically what i do.Toby had some good advice keep it simple.Like he said there are many plugs that i take for a nice walk but i feel good knowing they are in there.I have no off road vehicle so I am not one of those with multiple plug options.Thier are many times i was forced to dance wit who i brung an it has worked out ok.I think if u where gonna keep it to a few plugs be shure u can cover all the bases wit em.As there is many different types of striper terrain. A few good choices would be needlefish, darters an a finish type swimmer.like a Redfin. In these three u can cover most of the water colum.Add a jig an u basically have most of the bases covered.with all that said makin a bag for the night is one of my favorite things to do.There always things to consider one of my main factors is amount of light. Then amount of water or tidal stage.

Lots of good advice here. When I'm plugging, I carry a bag with five plugs and my terminal tackle. I have a couple monster bags in my truck and from them stock the small bag, depending on where I'm fishing.

My resolution for this year is to try and carry only a single row bag.
Since I fish mostly at night: 2 needles, plastic minnow, Danny, bottle, sluggos, jigs and teasers. Oh yeah, then I need a pencil popper, pikie, polaris for dawn and there goes the single row bag...

Surfcaster large (old style) bag with 8 inserts... all of the 5- slot/ large/ "old" variety. These easily handle Large Dannys, Needles & Bottles-- I'm a plug maven, & target the large only... and like NIB choose a 2WD approach & parking/ walking, so I need to carry lots of different plugs & sizes, and all targeted to vatying situations, spots & conditions... SO:
I carry pre- loaded 2- insert sets always/ already made up, & labled: "Day/ Heavy"... "Day/ Light"... "Night/ Heavy"... & "Night/ Light."
What goes where is fairly obvious w/ exp: no 3oz. Bottles nor large Dannys nor 9" / 3oz.+ Needles in "Night/ Light" ... and no 5" or even 7" Minnow plugs( unless loaded), & no Spooks nor light/ Gibbs Needles in "Night/ Heavy,"... & no Pencils nor tins in the "Night" inserts, etc...
This is my solution! Rotate 2- insert sets as needed into bag... add or remove a light or soft plastics as needed-- and then have the proverbial milk- crate of "back- up" plugs in your vehicle for situational/ unusual/ non- rotation, & replacement plugs! (i.e., Reverse Atoms, Yo- Zuris, Deep Divers, X- large Plugs not normally carried, etc.)

i basicallly used the method toby said this year.i got the medium sized bag with 1 row of 5 tubes.alot easier to get around with, and im learning the advantages and disadvantages of all the plugs i have
i think of it like being a sniper. you got a magazine with 5 shots, your light weight, mobile, and deadly.
the oposite is the machine gunner, youve got your gun and 15 pounds of ammo, clumsy and heavy, still deadly but no more than the sniper.

When i need to move ill put some essentials in the skinz belt bag(redfin, bomber, two size spooks/howdys, metalip, darter and a needle) some other misc in the pockets(tin, jigs, shads etc). with this setup i can cover alot of ground at nite if i need to. If im gonna be more stationary ill bring the big bag, or ill bring the big bag if i dont really know where im gonna end up.
