Year Long Tourney starts now!

Just read somewhere that they got fish at the west wall today so i guess its time to start the S-B Year Long Tourney!

Here's how it works.

First you have to have ten posts on this message board. You then catch a big fish. You measure it and if you can , weigh it. You must have the fish witnessed by another member of striped -bass. Its their job to verify the size. You can release or keep the fish). Send in a slip (they are available online) to John with the info about the fish and the fisherman and the witness and signed by both people. Then you are in. There is no entry fee and there are prizes awarded . The length of the fish determines the winners. In case of a tie for length , the greater weight wins. If length and weight tie , first fish entered wins using the date John gets the slip as the entry date. . So its good to get the weight and the length and get the slip in fast. We don't know what the prizes will be. However last year there were rods and plugs , etc for prizes. We'll let you know.

I will build another Canal jigging stick for the person who catches the largest fish in the canal this season like I did last year. This year it will be a brute. The Breakaway 1209. I'm sure there will be many other prizes.

Don't confuse this with the famous Striped- Bass Four Leg gourmet gatherings and fishing tourney experience!! . That is Catch and release only. We'll get that going pretty soon. i just wanted to get the year long going just in case someone lands a fifty this weekend (OJ got aquitted so stranger things have happened) !!

This is a shore fishing thing. John said he wants to do something for the boat guys too so we'll have to figure that out and announce it later. Maybe two divisions.

I have a question? You said that the fish has to be witnessed by a S-B member, if you kept the fish, wouldn't that be proof enough? The reason I ask, is I really haven't had the priviledge of fishing with any of you guys yet, and when I'm up there, you guys are not to be found. Can we amend the rules alittle? I mean, if I get one big enough, I'm gonna keep it anyway. Also, does it count if caught in another state other than RI? Sorry for the ???'s.

Thanks!
johnny

Whether you keep it or not . someone has to see it. Its a lot easier to find a witness if you keep it but it has to be witnessed one way or another. If we didn't ask for a witness we'd get all kinds of bogus claims of big fish caught.I think as long as there is another S-B person there to witness it , you can catch it anywhere.

Saltheart last year we were able to get the fish weighed in at a tackle shop, and have them sign the slip. THe four leg was the one that needed a witness because i was c&r .

I picked up my 1209 today from Mike. It is sweet.

Saltheart;

I totally agree with what your saying about having a witness. My point is how many people here regularly fish with other from the board? Most of the times I come up to Rhody, I get there at like 11pm, and leave at 8 or 9 the next morning for the trek back to Jersey. What if I caught one and had it weighed and measured in Weekapaug B+T, would that count? Sorry for all the ???'s, just trying to figure out if I'll be able to participate.

Thanks!
Johnny

P.S. Personally, I think only fish caught in Rhody should be eligible.

Big Fish

I'm new to this board & don't knowyou guys. I usually fish Charlestown breachway. If I caught a big striper & had it weighted at Breachway B&T would that count. Just wondering. By the way is there anything happening in the salt pond(Charlestown)? Good luck fishing to all.

Yes a weigh in at the tackle shop is OK. Mike T (M+D's) and Don M )weekapaug B+T)and Salty dog (flyrodand reel outfitters) etc are members here anyway. The tackle shop guy can sign your slip. remember , its the length that is the primary criteria for winning. You can't just catch one and say , "I had it measured at XYZ tackle" Someone from XYZ has to vouch for you and send in the slip.
Jenty , the whole idea of the tourneys and the witness thing is to get people from the site to fish together. Come to one of the 4 legs and you will meet lots of S-B people at once. You'll also find out there are many guys from your area involved.

just a question or two.. "1" can we enter a fish entered into the s-b year long as an entry into another tournament also? such as msba. "2" lets say someone catches a monster during the four leg, can that fish sweep the tourney? "3" last year in the rhode island leg i was under the impression that narragansett bay and points north were off limits for the tourney... uh.. is it?
happy easter all

nice job bloo..

Gee , We're going to have to hire Perry Mason to run this tourney!

Fish were you want. The regional rules were for the four leg where we limit you to fish certain areas of Mass or RI. Thats not for the year long. We may have broad limits like NJ to ME but I forget. Maybe John remembers.

I believe last year the rule was that you could only win one prize for a given fish. So if you catch the years biggest at one of the 4 legs , you still only get one prize for the fish and the next fish down moves up in the category you didn't choose your prize from. OK Here's the only rule that's really importatnt , John and I get to be final arbitors of what's OK or not. Last year , except for boat fish , we decided every fish everybody asked about could get in somehow.

This is for fun and to meet people and meet fishing buddies. Anyway , we'll post more details.

BlooCrab good Job. If you change it to general area and add date , we could probably use it.

What if I catch it on a Tuesday and I can't weigh it until Friday and then work comes up and I have to call Slip to weigh it for me and while on route he get's a flat and calls BM to take it and then he goes mental on they way when he see's fish breaking at the getty he just drove by and then the fish dries out in the back of his sled and looses 10 lbs.............oh forget it.

Thumbs up

OK, ok, ok, ... Couple things which are open to discussion here

Saltheart - sweet rod offer!

Guyfish - welcome aboard! Breachway isn't a board sponsor (yet) but there is Weekapaug not too far for wieghing in a tourney fish...

For the year long, we want to encourage C&R, that's why the buddy system can work if two board members are fishing together and they don't want to keep the fish, the can measure overall length (not fork this year) and release the fish. There will be a minimum length, probably 42 inches.

One thing which we started talking about last year was weighing the fish instead - like on a Berkely Digital Scale. We need to figure out weight or length for a measurement...

Area - last year, we started with Mass, Rhody, & Maine but extended that to CT & NY, when witnessed by a board member. Weigh slips were also accepted from board sponsors like M&Ds, Weekapaug, Sportsman's Den, & FFSW. If we get some more board sponsors in CT, NY, or NJ - we can take slips in from them too.

Last year's slips are here but we may doc them up a little for this year: http://www.striped-bass.com/tourneyslipsyl.shtml

Their is no restriction on fish being limited to one tourney, as long as the rules for the S-B tourney is met.

Boat Division - maybe

How is that for questions and answers to get this going ??

We got a competitiove bunch this year John. I thought they were gonna hang me with all the technicalities.
Anyway , item of discussion

Length vs weight...

A guy would have to be blind to miss a length by 1 inch but he could miss a pound or two easy do to scale calibration error. I bet if you grabbed 10 Berkeleys off the shelf and tested them with a known weight , you'd get a pound or two range on the measurements
Also , everyone has a tape measure to measure for a keeper but not many people have scales and would have to buy them. I have a 50 pound spring scale already. Its not a berkely though so that means it wouldn't count??? I use the thing twice a year. I'd get stuck with two. i could use each one once a year!
Anyway , thats my heavy sell for length not weight.

Looks like I'll have to log in a few more posts. The only unfortunate thing is that I'll have to fish with John S and Marc Z all the time.

Oh yeah , it seems like if MA and ME are OK then NH should be included too. They do have a coast line even though its a short one.

I don't know if I agree on the scale issue. I used my 50 lb digital once and weighed a small cooler with a lead weight in it at 8.2 lbs. I brought the same cooler and weight to the post office and weighed it on their certified scales and it weighted 8.3 lbs. I'd say I'd have more confidence in weight on good scales vs weight estimated by length. Wev'e all seen racers that 10 years ago would have weighted 40 lbs and today weigh a fraction of that weight.

If I can put my two cents in. The tape is lighter to carry. Plus I can see the lines on the tape better than the scale.
