It went a little something like this....

Wednesday night was a little wacked the bite didn't start untill just after midnight and majority of the fish were under 16", third stop of the early early morning revealed squeteague rather on the "short" side of what i am used to/remember seeing all were 18" and fat.

Thursday night was a silent one with me being home in bed by 2:30am and with a bloody right hand from a launched danny.

Friday night was different. Didn't even get to wet a line and i took a beating. Getting slapped in the face with a blackjack isn't something that feels all that good... Lucky for me all i got was a black eye but I lost my gear... Lesson learned.....

Ya Friday night did not go too well, 12 or so years of many solo night fishing outings and never an issue. Some of the folks i have fished along side were not the typical types many would fish next to but never had any problems, in fact, some of the best nights were those. Friday night/Saturday morning was a different one. Between 12:45am and 1am, a young teenager who was overly curious with my rod and reel greeted me. He grabbed it, started fooling around I asked him to put it back, and he was laughing and slurring. I grabbed it off him and he punched me in the chest. I pushed him back and told him to F' off... put the rod back in my truck and another kid jumped on my back. I tossed him to the ground and when i was finished with him another teen flipped his wrist and what is stupid was i knew what he had, I had time to react but stood there like a moron. So across the face i get whacked with a blackjack and they made off with my tica dolphin 10' saltiga blast 4500 my large skinz bag and my small canyon bag along with my lunch cooler.

For me it was rather embarrassing and very humiliating, usually i carry my neck knife but that was at home, as i left work and probably a good thing in a weird way as I probably would have killed them. Did not talk about it as i had a few friends check the local shops and keep an eye out. There was a moment where i had thought about dumping majority of my gear. After a some thought, i came to deciding not to let this incident discourage me but to make me smarter and safer.

I am ok other then some bruising around my eye and some broken capillaries but it could have been worse... another 1/4" and it would have hit my eye or it could have been a knife or a gun.

Thats horrible Leptar.... sorry for your pain. You say you`re ok but just like a car accident its traumatic.

If I was you I would carry a billy about three feet long.... it sucks but looked what happened to you.

Be strong and don`t let it effect your future trips if you can.

Actually I would sacrifice my rod in that situation....use it to defend yourself....would make a very handy and lengthy weapon.

What general area were you fishing?

Mike

Fog land beach to be exact and i would have used my rod in a heart beat but it was in the back of my CR-V and the chit hit the fan so fast...
I wouldn't say traumatized but yes it will affect my approach in the future... After the WTF just happened set in, I started to think alot less about my interests and more about my family, especially my son.

One of the worst parts about fishing gear theft is the way it kind of ruins fishing for a while since you of course think of that incident anytime you go fishing...

It definitely takes time to get over something like that and to get back to enjoying your time on the water. It ruins your trust in people too.

Sorry to hear about the loss and it's good to hear you are ok.

I think that would rattle anyone. Be thankful you're not worse off, if they were f'ed up who knows where it could have gone.

Anytime you want to fish Fogland give me a shout...I'm right up the road. The notion that this happened in my backyard is more than a little disturbing.

Did you notify the police?

Sorry to hear of your incident leptar.Glad you're ok.
Seems I've been hearing/reading more and more on this subject lately.Time of year? We're out there more now?Or just more brazen individuals?
Makes me think twice when I want to hit the sand at nite-solo.
Oh yeah-I do carry a Gerber Hunter on my belt-always.

No, I didn't call the police... I wasn't thinking properly....

Tica Dolphin 10' with a Saltiga Blast 4500 PP50

Aquaskinz bag large with wood inside along with tin

Canyon bag small with gear.. a split of wood and you can't get anymore plastic...

An artic zone lunch cooler yellow with 4 - 4oz packages of jerky hut jerky.

As far as what was in the bags... Its all replaceable with time i guess... some easier then others... On Monday i took out my last 2 woolworth bought 7" redfins and stuck them in the skinz bag right on the side of my retro-fited cooper and 4 fixter pencils. The rest will be replaced slowly.

A damn shame. Knife on a belt most times never gets off the belt I think in situations like that.

A good stout walking staff you can make yourself from an oak sapling is very intimidating and if necessary very destructive plus it keeps knives at bay very easily with a little practice.

Again....sorry for your bad experience....wish I could have been there to assist in applying a solid thumping

Drunken teens hanging at a beach on Friday night? Police probably know which H.S they are from and the teens will probably go back to the spot soon.

....and now you know another reason this old bastard carries a belt gaff. A short handled gaff can be a very intimidating weapon. Especially if you have to deal with some nitwits like these guys. I'm tellin' ya, maybe it's the old Nam Vet in me but if I run into a situation like this I'll put the ol' gaff to 'em in short order. I'm way to old to be fighting clean.

self defense

Pepper spray is awesome....I have one of those ugly billy's that I keep in my truck. Maybe I'll become closer with that on night trips. I'd hate to think you have to start carrying anything more substantial. One thing with OC is when you spray it even if your upwind your going to get some blow back. So if you buy some I would suggest spraying it and seeing what it is like so you don't become disabled and a bigger target for anyone coming after you after you spray them. I have had it sprayed on me and been involved in it being sprayed numerous times and it can really get to you. Don't rub you eyes.... ever, even if no ones around to help you just put up with the pain. Boy thinking about leptar misfortune gives real cause for concern.

Leptar, sorry to hear about this BS you had to go through. There are alot of dangers out there for those of us who like to jump around on the rocks at night but dealing with little punks shouldn't be one of them. None of us should have to worry about that. I'm a local high school teacher and know teachers from a bunch of schools. I'll ask them to keep their ears open. If these kids are high schoolers then chances are this story will be all over the school quick. These kind of kids like to brag about cowardly stuff like that so hopefully something surfaces. There is nothing I would enjoy more than getting these little punks busted. It's kids like that which give all young kids a bad rap.
