"good old days" (non-fishing)
In another thread some were talking about "the good old days" growing up on the farm and the little memories that take us back to another time and place. Also how sad it is that many never had or will ever experience its many charms. I was lucky enough to part of my grandfather/uncle's farm when growing up and am proud to say that even though its no longer a dairy farm it is still a working farm and in the family today which sadly, is more than many can say for the farms in their past.
One of the best things about the human mind is its ability to recall the fond memories and even if only for a moment, can bring us joy!!
So c'mon all you good old farm boys and girls why not share some of your favorite stories?? And maybe be reminded of some that you forgot??
I will start with...
.....for fun....jumping out of the hay loft into the brand new sawdust pile....POOF!

my Grandmother J had an orchard in Morgantown, WVa. THe family would gather in the Fall and harvest for her. The cousins would be climbing the trees , eating apples until we got yelled at then we'd be eating rubarb. I saw my first football game at UWVa, a night game and they had a white football. My Aunt and Uncle taught there and the Stadiun was just down the street, University Avenue.
My Grandparents F lived in N. Truro across the street from the Cold Storage. We kids got to dig clams and visit the guys in the Plant. There was a tramway the boats unloaded and sent their catches to shore to be cleaned, packed and frozen, then the train (?!!) (The train is long gone and houses are now in the rail bed. )was loaded an away it went to the city. Grandpa was the engineer there and we'd walk over and pick out dinner. We'd pick blueberries for pies and breakfast cereal and beachplums for jelly. Their dirt driveway was oiled with used motor oil, our feet got as black as asphalt. Gawd, I miss those days..

The Good-Ole-Days are here and now. Live every day, enjoy your friends and family and hopfully you will have an opportunity to look back on the good times..
I remember spending the spring fishing in a brook a bike ride away from the house as soon as the ice went out and the rest of the summer soakign worms for sunfish in the old mill pond up the street...
When I got old enough I would fish for LMB every evening....
Used to go to visit my grandmother in ME and crawl around the three story garage and look at the old stuff.
Spent days on end hanging around the family wood shop and riding with my dad when he went to pick up material or do an install.
Tearing apart and fixing bicycles/lawnmowers/minibikes/cars all to just do it...

i went for a ride....
my friend Tony had a great horse (palamino)at his little farm
and i wanted to learn to ride.... so he said: hop on....
there was no saddle or bridal - this was bare back riding...
so we take off down this road and at first the old road was clear
then it got real dense with folliage fast and i started get wacked
as we galloped along....with dozens of horseflies biting his ears
making him run faster and faster and faster....
finally , we get back to the
pasture and i started to fall off...but wouldnt let go! so i had my feet
crossed over his neck and was hanging on for dear life to his head
 upside down...until i took the horse down with a big thud
....and i rolled outta the way at tony's feet
.....saying here's your horse back Tony....

The good OLD days on the farm jumping from the loft into the fresh hay and finding the lost pitchfork going fishing at the middle pond with grubs dug out of the cowsh-t pile the bull in the pen near the barn that just did not like me The ford tractor with the gray hood cover,by the way it was the ONLY auto on the farm. I saw one the other day all fixed up and new looking boy did that take me back. Who can forget the trip to the out house in the middle of the night in the winter and I do recall there being a Sears and Robuck catalog in there. Having to fight the chickens for your morning eggs. Tex the deaf and half blind ram that loved to sneakup behind me and butt me to the ground and run off before I could get back up to fight The deer in the garden that always got more than we did.The sheep at sheering time all bald and skinny The seaplane that would fly over and drop the weeks mail and newspapers out as the dog chaced it overhead. The small boat my dad made so mom could keep me near her as she dug quahogs. The lobster feasts with all the family and freinds there. Anns hut hidden in the woods far from the white farm house. Walking the shore and picking up lost fishing lures The water from the well that was ALWAYS ice cold The large fireplace in every room of the farm house. The sound of the bellbuoys at night that would lull me to sleep. The way my dad could tell what size ship was passing the island on still nights by the sound the large props would make pushing the water. Walking to the Gray house then the Red house then to Ann's hut just for something to do some days. Watching my uncle cut up quahog shells to make mosaics with them. ( if you go to Cuttyhunk you can see some at the church) The way we got to watch ONE tv show per week as it cost to much to run the generator. The kerosene lamps that lite the night and the kero heaters that kept me warm. The smell of fresh baked bread in the kitchen. The cream on top of the milk in the glass bottle that we would fight over (yum). Should I go on
Thanks Jenn

How come no one mentioned the sheep
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I must have been about 6.... couple older guys brought me into Nappy(Napoleon) Barber`s slaughter house on a small farm.... in total shock and amazement I watched him slaughter a cow and two large hogs....strung them up shot in head with a .22 pistol....throats slit to bleed....steaming entrails falling into the 55 gallon drums.....
I`m not sure if this was a good thing but it was amazing.
You want to talk about good old days...
My bro and I grew up in a one-traffic light town, with three gas stations, no major chains, and no crime.
We used to take the boat out every Saturday and Sunday with the old man, grandpa, and our old friend Cookie Ferrioli...spring and fall from Granby to Gloucester for cod, summer to Galilee for blues, stripers, and tuna.
We lived for fishing, family, and fun.
Sadly, in the late 80's, the boat didn't do so well, Mikey didn't really like fishing that much, and we stopped.
Luckilly for me, I landed a job at the Cape in the summer of 1995, and decided to Shanghai my brother into coming with me...I had to break his f'ing wrists just to go out to Nauset for a day to fish...two years later he was hooked...three years later the old man was back on board (literally), and the good old days started again.
Last year the old man bought two lami-van staal combos. Mikey can't get the sand out of his Jeep, and I'm happy again...love getting the band back together...wans't easy though.
Ain't easy beein the fishing cheerleader.
It's a long way to the top if you want to rock 'n roll.
Later,
Rick
I remember playing cowboys over at my cousin taking the ponys up the hill a driving the cattle around the pasture till the head cow got mad and would chase everybody that was on foot. Nothing like running for the fence barefoot and stepping in a nice cow flop. OH they were the good old days. THomT
