pleasant bay by the chatham lighthouse

im in cape cod on vacation and i just started fishin yesterday, i caught 3 stripers on chunk herring about a mile into the bay from the lighthouse, across from tern island, one fish was 37 inches, one was 36 inches and one was 32 inches, the 36 incher was caught on a freshwater pole with 8 lb test, im going to try using 6 inch bubblegum sluggos on a jig head, would u reccomend anything else? thanks

Slip & I were in that general area Saturday night, but the fishing was slow. I nailed a couple 24-27 inch fish on a smoke/glitter 7 inch split tail, rigged weightless on a 7/0 Owner hook. Rigging depends on the depth, current and where the bass are holding. That water is relatively shallow I believe and bait (sand eels) probably isn't that big, so maybe a 6 inch Half Jerk weightless to start. I'm a big believer in smoke, it works everywhere I fish it, but Thill was catching on white Saturday and I think Slip was throwing yellow. If you want to still catch but get lazy, throw an 8 inch grub and vary the jig head/retrieve to alter the depth and zone your fishing .

Yeah, We were outside of south beach Friday afternoon and for a while Saturday afternoon and water is still cool out there. Much warmer in pleasent bay. Summer south beach pattern not really happening yet but we found numerous groups of terns working over pods of blues working sand eels in the 3-4 inch size. A lot of the pods of blues would go down when we were able to get within casting range. We caught blues from 2-8lbs and they all coughed up sand eels in large quantities. Not a bass to be found even when we let our weighted sluggos sink below the blues on the bottom. By the way sluggo chunks work on blues too ;-). Saturday afternoon around 5 the wind let up and blues were all over on top by the Chatham cut outside. I lost a few flies to them and it was fun but still no bass. Only bass we caught were on weighted sluggos up in pleasent bay.

Thumbs up

Capestriper, Try a few Cotton Cordel 1 oz Pensil poppers or Yo-zuri Mag popper. Have done really well with them down there, both bass and blue's.

You are fishing the right tide for that area. The best fishing is from 2 hours before until two hours after low tide. So, based on my tide chart you have good tides there for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Now, go buy yourself a dozen eels. Park in the parking lot in front of Chatham Light. Walk down the stairs and walk to your left up the beach until you come to the houses with the first big breakwall that protrudes out. Wade in front of that breakwall out to your waist or as far as you can stand it. Cast towards England and reel very slowly. You may find your eel will move towards your left even though the main current is running heavy to your right. You are in a big eddy and the stripers love it there. Slowly move towards your left down the beach to the other large breakwall. You can wade in front of this breakwall about 3/4's of the way out, now cast towards the channel marker. Good Luck and let us know how you do. I'll be there in August for my 9th season.

P.S. You may want to give Ballston a shot, it's about a 50 minute drive from Chatham. Fish the large bowl as you walk in and the points and bowls to your left and right as far as you can walk. Eels and needlefish are the ticket here.
