Join us Saturday February 10th for our annual event that includes fly tiers, plug and rod builders, educational seminars and great raffle prizes. Learn innovative tying and fishing techniques from some of the masters of the Striper Coast. Attend educational seminars that will feature both intro and advanced kayak fishing courses with On the Water's kayak columnist Joel Swan, and new presentations from both Steve McKenna and Dennis Zambrotta.
The format of this show is a bit different from most other fishing shows. Fly tyers are set up at round tables and you are encouraged to pull up a chair to get a close look and ask questions. Pick the minds of veteran surf and boat anglers as well as the builders of many popular lures and rigs used along the striper coast.
The Saltwater Edge Conservation Raffle has raised over $14,000 since it’s inception for a variety of fisheries and coastal access advocacy groups. This year we will take a broader view and focus on the Narragansett Bay ecosystem. Many Rhode Islanders are concerned about the deteriorating water quality in Narragansett Bay and fishermen in particular concerned about the aggressive harvest of menhaden from the Bay. These two factors are related because menhaden play such an important role in a healthy ecosystem. Menhaden have been called “the most important fish in the sea”. Most anglers recognize that bunker’s high protein content make them an important food source for stripers, blues and squeteague; but less well known is their important role as filter feeders. Menhaden can filter about four gallons of seawater a minute said another way that’s 1,000,000 gallons of bay water every 180 days. The improved water quality and clarity allows light to reach the eel grass beds which in turn releases more oxygen into the water which benefits the entire ecosystem, humans included.
This year’s Conservation Raffle proceeds will be donated to the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association and earmarked to fund the rebuilding of fish ladders (for herring), menhaden research and other initiatives that will help preserve “the most important fish in the sea”.

Kenny Abrames: Artist, lecturer, fly designer and author of “Striper Moon” and “A Perfect Fish”. Kenny has a deep understanding of striped bass and what makes them eat. His innovative designs catch fish when others don’t. What most don't know is that Kenney has fished for stripers as well as many other species of fish almost every way possible. Pick his mind and learn about a lot more then just about fly fishing.

Steve Farrar: They don’t get any more creative than this talented New Jersey tier. For years Steve has pushed the envelope for design and realism with synthetics. Watch a fertile fly tying mind at work.
Dave Fontaine: One of the best rod builders on the Striper Coast. Surf rods, boat rods, fly rods and more. This is a chance to check out and compare blanks from many popular companies all in one place.

Fishing Innovations: Mike Warecke builds the best locking rod holders on the market. Talk to Mike and take a look at the various styles he builds or have anything custom you desire built.
Joe and Jeff Martins: (Point Jude Lures) Joe has reproduced a number of classic, metal saltwater fishing lures that first appeared on the RI surf scene in the late 1940's. Many of these deadly designs have been out of the spotlight for some time. A Rhody classic.
Captain Bruce Macomber: Owner of
Howlin' Wolf Charters and a guide for the SWE. Bruce has been featured on On The Water TV a number of times. He is skilled in all manner of fishing and is very well regarded by his clients.
Bruce Marino: A contract tier for Pacific Fly Group. Bruce has developed many effective patterns including the Wounded Baitfish Series. Bruce is very familiar with the waters around Watch Hill and the Race.
Steve McKenna: Steve is a very well respected shore angler. He has developed effective techniques to rig and fish Sluggo’s as an alternative to live eels. While best known recently for the Sluggo, Steve has an incredible number of hours on the water and extensive experience fishing for stripers with all manner of offerings, from eels to plugs.
Captain Corey Pietraszek: Veteran guide of Newport, Sakonnet, Westport, and Narragansett Bay waters. Also a fly tyer for the Saltwater Edge.
Captain Jeff Smith: Jeff owns Fin Addition Charter in Wellfleet. He is founder of the popular Flyfishsaltwaters.com website. His experience in fly tying has generated several popular patterns with “Buffy the Striper Slayer” being his best known.
Joel Swan: On The Water’s Kayak Fishing columnist. Joel has tremendous experience and pictures taking full advantage of the fishing access provided by using a kayak.
Captain Eric Thomas: Owner of Teezer Guide Service. A commercial tier of Rhody Classics as well as his own designs. A great instructor.
Dennis Zambrotta: A veteran of the Newport and Block Island surf and a wealth of surfcasting knowledge and history. DZ's new presentation will cover basic rigging, droppers,
plug alterations (Ex: How to load Redfins), live eels, playing the wind,
reading structure, and how bluefish help striped bass fishermen.
